All this discussion of unlikely places to hear CT tunes...reminds me of

when I used to work at The Gap on the drag in Austin, TX. The Gap(along

with Banana Republic and Old Navy) have tapes made for all their stores to

play at different times of the year. Well, when I was an employee(before

the time of Frosty) there I used to hear Carolyn's Fingers, Sigh's Smell of

Farewell, Iceblink Luck and Heaven or Las Vegas on a regular basis. More

recently I've heard Bluebeard and Frosty. They always have Frosty on their

tapes right now so anyone who hasn't heard it can go camp out at your local

Gap. Those tapes run about 3 hours so you may have to wait awhile, but

you'll definitely hear it.

Look you people, I started this a couple of weeks ago when I publicly stated

my opinion about a 30 $ cd single. I had not realized that I was wrong at the

time until alot of kind people opened my eyes. Please drop this whole

aggressive attack against Mender. She is just offering an opening where for

some people there is none.

If you think about it, When you go to a used cd store to pick up CT stuff, The

artists do not get any of THAT money. This is just ridiculous. I apologize

again for starting this but you need to think about it for a little bitand

yes, you should E the person directly if you have a problem with them.

Thank you,

Stratton,

So...I read up on msgs, and unfortunately have to inform you that I do

*not* have stereo capabilities. My decks are "prosumer" Panasonic decks

I bought for purposes of editing, and I had to give up stereo to be able

to get the complete editing system I wanted, with decks at $1,200 apiece.

Stereo would have cost me $5,000 per unit...way beyond my budget at the

time. When I've done music vids (twice) I've had to take the post work to

a production house with better equipment. So, sorry but I just don't have

two stereo decks. (And I also probably don't have all the videos Mender

referred to anyway, so I would have needed her or someone to make me

masters.)

Anyway, congrats on organizing the CT tape thing.

Peace,

Carol

Several of us didn't know she was copying *four* tapes for

But no one screamed at her about it...everything seems to have been

I also got the first Very Special Christmas cd (the red one). It doesn't

have any Cocteau Twins on it, but some great versions of x-mas tunes by

Alison Moyet, Eurhythmics, and the Pretenders (all female vocalists whom

I adore.)

Anyway, it's on my player right now as I procrastinate on the mother of

all take home finals :-) I'm thinking of dubbing my favorites from this

onto a tape with the Twins' versions of Frosty and Winter Wonderland and

some other seasonal stuff to give out to friends. Does anyone have any

suggestions of things in a similar vein? Maybe we could make it a list

project. You know, compile the ultimate christmas compilation . . .

This totem has been sent to you for iceblink luck. It has been sent

around the world five-ten-fiftyfold times so far. You will receive

iceblink luck within days of receiving this totem.

Do not send copies to people you think need iceblink luck. Don't send

any response whatsoever. Keep this message. The totem must not leave

your hands throughout the dark months of April and May. Send ten copies

and see what happens in four days. You will get a surprise. Complete

strangers (and maybe a few good friends) will send you messages

complaining

that you should never send chain letters. This is true, even if you are

not superstitious.

Good luck, but please remember: No copies of this message must leave

Greetings, Orville,

First, let me thank you for your ancient posting dated Wed, 15 Oct 1997

01:28:21.

I believe that it was in that message that I learned of the availability of

both of the Snow tracks on the Oglio "The Coolest Christmas" and "The Edge

of Christmas" compilations. I immediately ordered both of them from CDnow

(http://www.cdnow.com) and have been enjoying the "artificial Snow" ever

since.

Now, in your posting dated Tuesday, December 16, 1997 2:19 AM, you wrote:

Can you please pass along the publisher and catalog number for this? It

sounds really interesting.

As they say on the boards, "Break a leg" on your final.

I've taken to doing something like this from time to time, and over the

years these personal compilations take on a life of their own and get to be

real favorites, and not just a Christmas.

> Does anyone have any suggestions of things in a similar vein?

> Maybe we could make it a list project. You know, compile the

Sounds good to me... May I suggest that you try to find a copy of "A Lump

Of Coal" (First Warning, 72705-75702-2, 1991). I bought it especially for

the "Little Drummer Boy" done by the Hoodoo Gurus, but the Henry Rollins

"'Twas the Night Before Christmas" is not to be missed.

And in a somewhat different direction, but one of my favorites (after the

CT Snow tracks) for this year is "Greensleeves" (performed with santur,

bass, tabla, and percussion) on "Nomad Christmas - A World Music

Celebration". (Nomad, NMD 50314, 1997) From the cover: "Jazzy arrangements

spice classic Christmas tunes with flavors of India, Brazil, Bulgaria, and

the Mid East." Definitely not the Twins, but great for cleansing the

musical palate.

Once again, iceblink luck on your final and a Merry Christmas to all of the

List-Folk,

The 'A Very Special Christmas' compilations are put out byA&M. The first

one came out in 1987 and I believe the catalog # is CD 3911 / DX 2159. And

the proceeds benefit Special Olympics, good music for a good cause!

You might consider Tori Amos' version of "Little Drummer Boy," and

Everything But the Girl's "25th December" both found on a Christmas

Compilation called "You Sleigh Me!" which also includes a few other familiar

artists. Yesterday, I also ran into Esquivel (lounge) doing versions of

Christmas songs on his own personal holiday album, as well as Harry Connick,

Jr. - I think he releases one every year. All of these definitely a few

possibilities. I suggest going to your local independent music shop to see

what else might be available, considering they always carry neat, unusual

stuff, like Esquivel's album.

How about "Fuck Christmas" by Fear (The Record), and "Junky's Christmas" by

William S. Burroughs w/ the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy (Spare Ass

Annie). Just to mix things up a bit. ;-)

I want One!

My experience with the twins is limited to 4CC and treasure, although a

"friend" borrowed treasure....forever. Out in the sticks, were I am, the

nearest store that has any CD's is in Oregon state, about an hour drive

away.

By the way all, my name is Rey, I'm 32 y.o. and I meek out a miserable

existence in Long Beach WA fixing peoples pipes. I'm a plumber and I'm ti=

red

of it too! HA!

First heard the Twins in 91 on a comp tape a friend made. He never labele=

the tape, so I never knew who it was. The tape was stolen in 92, along wi=

th

the car.... And it wasn't until early this year that I found out who was =

on

that tape. Needless to say I ordered 4CC and treasure. I got 4CC, but the

lady at the record store said treasure was out of print..... SOL I guess.

If anyone knows of stores that might carry CT on the SW Washington Coast =

or

NW Oregon coast, tell me about them PLEEEZZEE!

I've been a member of this ListServ for a few days now, just reading stuf=

and I got to say----I Like It!

Every time I hear "Iceblink Luck," the first "chorus" where Liz sings

"you're the match" etc, & then keeps pouring out the words faster and

faster, I find myself swept away by her, and when she finally gets to

"exquisite stuff, yes" I'm shaking my head & saying to all my friends,

"did you HEAR that?" & they never seem as impressed by it as I am. I

can't exactly describe what about that part of the song is so amazing,

but it's the way she seems to get so caught up in the singing that she

just practically bursts out of the song structure and goes skyrocketing

up into the air - & then back to the "verse" structure again with the

next lines ("you yourself and your father", etc). Yep, genius. Never

heard anything else quite like it. This song absolutely overflows with

ebullience. It makes me happy to listen to it, so I'm convinced it's

about being very happy. "Iceblink Luck" is just the most brilliant song

title I can imagine for this song! I too like to play with words and Liz

Fraser fascinates me no end with the way she evokes emotions & images.

Here's something else that struck me the other day: on Head OVer

Heels there's a song called Gold Dust Rush. I read about Robin (right?)

having a cocaine addiction. Of course "gold dust" is a name for cocaine

(Fleetwood Mac "Gold Dust Woman"). So I imagine the song's at least

partially about cocain. "In the gold dust rush I can only

genu-u-FLAY-e-ect." But what a funny play on "gold rush." Sometimes I

think she must be a little insane, in a brilliant way, to come off with

these wacked song titles & otherwordly melodies.

I don't know any good record stores in the Pacific Northwest, but if you =

have web access you can buy them online. Here are a couple of places:

http://cdnow.com

http://www.cdconnection.com

or through the Cocteau Twins' own Digital Parking Lot:

https://www.midi.net/cocteau/order.html

By the way, the official CT website is at:

If you don't have web access, there are stores (e.g. Tower) which do =

telephone mailorder. I don't have the phone numbers handy, but I'm sure =

someone else could supply them.

Well, I'm now an official Kollege gradewate, folks ;-)

Of course, my first action will be to go out tonight and get comfortably

numb, but I had to check my e-mail first :-)

The comments on Iceblink Luck are really interesting to me because this has

always been one of my favorite CT tunes. The feelings it induces are

indescribable, so of course I will now attempt to do so . . .

Iceblink Luck is like a piece of morning, at the moment just before sunrise

when the it's light out but the light seems to have no source. It exists

for me in that semi-fugue state between sleep and wakefulness, where you

can hold an entire coherent conversation and not even remember it, or

recall it only as a dream. Iceblink Luck is an awakening.

It's funny, I tend to associate songs with a particular time of day.

Iceblink luck (as you may have surmised) is definitely a morning song for

me. I can wake up, play this song, and be reassured that there is beauty in

the world. Does anyone else associate songs with a time of day? Maybe it's

just me :-)

In other news . . . I just picked up the Judge Dredd soundtrack and guess

who was on it! Is Need Fire something the Twins did just for this project,

or is it available elsewhere?

Hallo Listies,

after all these xmas-recommendations again my favourite xmas-sampler (of cause

after the "Snow"), because i think, many new members here in these list are

interesting for that.

These sampler is more in the silent kind, etheric, dark, like the nature in

these time..

The title of these CD is:

Excelsis - A dark Noel

from the Projekt label. (PROJEKT 62)

And here are the tracks from these CD:

Carol of the bells Arcanta

welcome Christmas Love spirals downwards

oh come all ye faithful FuchiKachis Ethu

Carol of the bells This Ascension

Joey-

I had a similar experience once at McDonald's, when I realised that the Muzak I

was listening to was actually Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train". I was espescially

tickled by the Muzak arranger's attempts to recreate Randy Rhodes's guitar solo

using horns and a string section.

David.

P.S. - I agree with you. Mmmmender does'nt deserve the kind of abuse

that was heaped upon her recently. Although it's sad to see someone being cruel

to Mmmmender, I applaud the way that most people are sticking up for her.

You'll never believe this (but then again it IS Christmas...)

My family and I were having a quick dinner at (here goes...) Hometown

Buffet tonight with the normal "muzak" thing going on in the background.

I started subconsciously humming the song that was playing (I'm one

of those people that cannot ignore music in any form), when it dawned on

me what I was humming "are you the right man for me? are you safe are

you my friend? or are you toxic for me? will you betray my confidence?"

Yes, it was undeniably Bluebeard, in muzak form. My husband actually

caught it at the same time I did. I guess I stopped so suddenly upon

the

realization that I was actually hearing CT at HOMETOWN BUFFET, that I

looked like I was choking. Has anyone else had an experience like this?

Also, everyone, please be kind to each other. Some of you have been

kinda harsh to mmmmender. She really doesn't deserve that. I'm really

glad for her that she's been having the kind of experiences that we all

wish we could have. I think we're lucky to have her in our midst, and

doubly lucky that she will share her experiences with us! As far as the

video sharing thing, do you finger-pointers really know how

time-consuming it would be tp fill all those video requests? I

understand she's a Mom, has another one on the way, goes to school and

works! I KNOW FIRSTHAND HOW LITTLE FREE TIME SHE HAS!

thanks for listening!

there are soundboard recordings in existance, (as well as live footage of

quality is fantastic. as for where they are stored.....they are all in a

tiny little room at september sound, about the size of a closet. i was

i have to burst your bubble on this one jody and tell you that although

"live in london" is numbered, it's not limited to 1000 copies. many

people, including myself, own copies that state "1005/1000 copies"....go

figure! simon and i were speaking about this particular album and he says

he knows the guy who prints it, apparently he is currently in his 9th run

of 1,000 limited editions!!=20

ha ha ha I KNOW that the internet is an Intl medium! that's why i asked

for Southlanders (people in the Southern california area! not all mail

going out has to serve the planet, it may also include things on a

national, state, city,AND local community level!).....provided of course,

the subject matter is still in keeping with its area of expertise. I

was simply (and rather innocently) asking if people would care to come

out and play in the new year ( again, in LA) once having collected

names, then I could proceed to carry on communication via private email

. but it does require this "international medium" to get the message

across. Just had to answer back cuz Mr Raiskums made me feel as if I

had been fool enough to believe that the internet was indeed an

LA-exclusive medium. However, I will take up his

dinner-invite....say Summer of 99?

I agree with Leesa,

The recording is nothing special at all.. weak in fact.. especially as

the wow and flutter of the tape is audible on numerous tracks.

although it's a far better recording than "Lovers Are Mortal"!

But I'd be interested in getting live CD's of Cocteaus more recent

tours.. namely HOLV and 4CC... anyone know of places that sell

these CD's?

Last night, while I was Christmas shopping, I heard CT in not one store,

but two! First, I was in a little mall and I heard the familiar tinkly

sounds of "Frosty". I followed the sound into a small clothing store.

Wasn't looking for clothes, but I stayed in there for a couple minutes.

About an hour later, I stepped from the street into Cheapo Records, where

they were playing "Pandora." I commented ecstatically about it to the

woman behind the counter, but she had no idea what I was talking about and

seemed a little taken aback. Oh well . . .

You don't sound antagonistic, you just sound LOUD. TYPING IN CAPITALS IS

CALLED SHOUTING, and it hurts my ears!

But I agree with some of your comments. They are definitely

haunting and they have inspired me to want to make music. Blue Bell

Knoll has some astounding 'epiphany' moments (as I call 'em), like the

end of Itchy Glowbo Blow, and the guitar work on track 7 whose title I

forget. Athol-Brose is one of my faves and Liz's delicately spiralling

vocal on Carolyn's Fingers sends shivers up and down this white boy's

spine. Like fairy-music! I get this vision that she's throwing out

hoola hoops with her voice, musical hoola hoops that sparkle and

disintegrate into the air leaving rainbow-colored tracers that bewitch your

eyes as they fall to the earth and vanish. Only poetry can come close to

describing the feelings the Twins' music has evoked in me.

When you visit, you might like to load up the car CD player with your entire

CT collection and then some. It's about a three day drive to Ayres Rock from

Melbourne. Unfortunately, this poor little Melburnian still hasn't made it

there. However, having driven through much desert country in South

THANKS JOSEPH, for replying to my comment(s) and bringing me up to snuff

about e-mail etiqutte. I'll quit the shouting and rejoice in the fact that

I've come into a crowd that like me consist of people that love the sound that

the Cocteau Twins make. Some nights, I'll listen to the CT and I dream that

I''m living in Paris and I'm walking along some rue, (it makes no difference

which one) and it is cold, and in the back ground the CT's' are playing

in the backgound. Blue Bell Knoll is one I think of but it really makes no

difference. It is just that sound...those interesting chords and mystical

sounds out of Liz's mouth/head. Minor keys. Haunting....Interesting, I think

of their sound as cold, but inviting, delicious and very much sensual. I

confess I've listen to the Cocteau Twins daily for years and it has little

impact on my wife, .... I actually saw the CT live here in Houston a few

years back and she did not come with me. Odd concert, people there just

didn't know what to think of the Cocteau Twins. It just has an impact on

those primed listeners. I'm guessing...Anyway the only band that has struck

me in even a similar fashion is Lush and one could argue that that band is the

CT's little sibling. Or was. I enjoyed Joseph's description's of Liz's voice

and welcome other listener's thoughts as to this day I've not run into many

actual listeners of the Cocteau Twins. If ever any of you guys are in Texas

look me up. Bobby R. Miller Jr.

Here's my funny contribution:

For the Four Calendar Cafe tour, the Cocteau Twins played at Tulane college.

I think students were allowed in for free, or something, because this one guy

in particular remarked to someone who couldn't make it to the show, "It was a

good concert, but only one of them showed up." I suppose he thought there

were supposed to be two Liz's, which is not really hard to imagine given the

name...

I own a business that requires a lot of driving between job sites, and

early morning hours. I always have Twins music playing in the stereo of

the work van. I've noticed lately that my 53 year old uncle who works for

me, has been drumming on his knees to many of the songs, and goes totally

silent to others (such as 'Alice') as though he's taking in every note.

I've been waiting for him to ask me something like "who IS this?", but I

don't think he can quite bring himself to ask even though he is clearly

impressed. Not yet, anyway......

I too was under the impression that there were two female singers when I

first began listening to the Twins. It's even more amazing when you find

out there is only Liz!

Hey, all the funny stories being posted remind of a tale of my own. Back in

Dec. 1991 I was driving from California to New York City with some friends.

The guy that was stuck in my car was not a CT fan, but since he refused to

drive, I chose the music :-) I had dubbed the ENTIRE box set and that was

all I played for the first 2 days. When we got to Wyoming he finally

convinced me to switch. I SHIT YOU NOT, about 5 minutes later I wrecked!

Fortunately we weren't hurt, but we got trapped in Rock Springs (the

Wyoming version of Tartarus) for 8 days while my car got fixed. You can

rest assured that when we got back on the road, it was Twins until we hit

the city! Aikea-Guinea and Kookaburra have to be some of the world's BEST

driving songs !

I used to live in a small suburb of Baton Rouge, LA. We couldn't get cable as

far out as we lived, but we had that "Video Jukebox" channel. The first time I

had ever heard of the twins was on that station. The video for "HOLV" came on.

And in that video there are parts where the screen is split & Liz is singing 2

different parts to the song... I thought for the longest time that there were two

female twins. As much as i love the twins, if there were "two liz's" i think it

would send me over the edge of euphoria & i would be lost forever...

doesn't conform to "rules of etiquette" (concerning spelling, grammer,

(Just as i'm doing now)

The thing that has been bothering me is the direction that some of the

slamming takes. As I said, debate is good, but when it takes the form of

personal attack the pleasure of debate is spoiled. Logical falicy takes it's

place leaving a bad taste in my mouth.

I know it's only a few of you who react in illogical ways to others

I MESSED UP!!! anyway, let me go on...This activity that we all do...Is

some how important to all of us. So I value your thoughts, and am delighted

that there are others that listen to this stuff. And feel compelled to reach

out to faceless and nameless(at times) others and relate. But I've always

felt that the CT's sound was meloncholic and often a bit cold. I love it and

have to admit that there are times when I listen to them, I'm glad to be alone

and lost in my thoughts. I saw them once, and it was odd, people just

listening, tending to their random isolationist thoughts. I live in America,

and they have a distinctly unamerican sound. I imagine someone like Camus or

Sartre really liking them...I sort of laugh to myself when I read there are

couples out there who listen to the CT together...my wife is the anti-fan and

I prefer to listen to them in solitude. Any thoughts or am I just off-

track???

interesting. i would have to agree with you, especially with their earlier

music which was quite Dark (it is no coincidence that the Twins were on the

same label as the goth uber-group Bauhaus, as well as Dead Can Dance, early

stuff by Modern English, etc -- dark dark dark).

i don't think that happy is quite the word i personally would use, but i think

that i see what some of the other fans mean: the music is light and not

ponderous or oppressive as a lot of other musical formats are. that is to

say, the aural sculpture that Mr. Guthrie does is not heavy, it is exactly as

deep as it needs to be.

many of the fans, myself included, get happiness from listening. my

impression has always been that it was something i brought to the music. with

the possible exception of "Summerblink" i don't think that the Twins intended

for any of their music to be "happy". not that they are trying to make

depressing music mind you, it is just that i consider thier music to be

largely outside of the framework of merely converying emotions....

interesting indeed!

Yeah, their early stuff is really dark, especially the "Lullabies" EP, I

think, which is one of the best things they've done (imo, oc). But =

they've

been able to do just about every emotion over the years. "Frou Frou

=46oxes..." for example, is a pretty joyous song -- the way it bursts out

after a quiet opening -- I used to listen to it every morning.

My name is greggie and I live in Atlanta, GA, USA. I have been a big fan

of the Cocteau Twins since 1985 (Echoes.. and Tiny Dynamine). I have had

the great fortune to have seen them perform live three times. I have

seen very few promo videos, though.

I also subcribe to the mailing lists of three other artists; David

with each of these lists, although the Sylvian list is my favorite (I am

fairly vocal on that particular list). Perhaps since I am now subscribed

here that will change! :)

I tend to lurk for a little bit, particularly if I'm new to a list, but

I definitely participate after a short while especially when I see a

good thread...

Yeah Paul, this explosive outburst type of thing happens in quite a few

of the Twins songs, e.g. Pur. . I really love the way they lull you into

submission to the music with a hypnotic intro and then burst out with a

really emotional finale. I think that the issue here is not a happy-sad

dichotomy, but rather a strength of emotion issue. Even some of the

"happier" songs from the Twins seem to have a wistful quality about

them. Like joy experienced in the wake of great sorrow . . .

Don't get me wrong . . . I never said a happy song couldn't be

emotionally powerful. My point was that, regardless of the type of

emotion they are expressing, the Twins do so with great depth and power.

It may not sound logical, because (to me at least) it isn't really a

logical issue. What it boils down to is that the emotional power is

independent of the type of emotion. My final point was simply to agree

with Raxalah's earlier assertion about the Twins' music being

> largely outside of the framework of merely converying(sic) emotions

>

I felt that the juxtaposition of joy and sadness might be one reason for

this. Sometimes we are at our best when things are at their worst. I

think the Twins do a great job of capturing that sort of sentiment. I

won't bore you with cliches about rays of sunshine and cloudy days, it

goes *so* much deeper than the weather :-)

Hi all,

I think I like the CT for the same reason. Their early

albums, up until Treasure, had a beauty that came out of a dark and

deep emotion of great power something like sorrow or at least a

feeling of desolation and longing with Liz' voice as the bridge to

happier days. Their concerts had the same atmosphere with Liz being

very nervous and very sensitive to the mood of the audience (83-86).

Victorialand for me is the definite start of a new kind

of ethereal music in which the overall tone is much lighter and more

polished. I must stress clearly that I do like everything they made so

far, but to be honest ... for me one of the main attractions of CT-

music used to be the mystery of the lyrics/words. Since HOLV and 4CC

that aspect has gone, which I regret. I still have that odd feeling,

that if I would know all the exact words and their meaning to Liz,

that it would loose its beauty in a way. I am very interested how you

all feel about that.

Throughout the dark months,

      Jacques

You're talking perfect sense my friend! I'm a psychologist, and although my

emphasis is on memory, I've always been interested in psychometrics (mental

testing.) One type of test that clinicians employ is called a projective

test, you've probably heard of the Rorschach Inkblot test. The whole idea

is that the patient/subject projects their own feelings onto the image.

I've always felt that CT music is sort of an auditory equivalent. Not that

there isn't any real meaning behind the songs. It's just that the

indefinable quality to them makes it easier to put your own words,

thoughts, and feelings into the experience.

Any Music Therapists out there want to give it a shot? We could make some

cash marketing Cocteau Twins Music to therapists everywhere! :-) Of course,

we'd have to cut the band in on it . . .

since I have withdrawn my offer to buy), but to my shock and absolute

in the RECENT ARRIVAL bin of used cd's. Like most of you, I gravitate

to the 'C' section immediately upon arriving at a record store... You

Treasure (US re-issue) and HoLV.-- Santa obviously knew that I had been

Maybe I should offer to record Snow and 16 Days for a couple of people

Hi.

I have to

agree about two of the songs you mentioned.

While Cocteau Twins can do no wrong

with any song they do, I do have a lot

of favorites. And some are even higher up

on the list.

"I wear your ring" is Heavenly to me.

It's one of my favorites to sing along to.

(i prefer the unknown "lizlyrics" but I love the

"between the sunrise and sunset" part).

There is a Salvidor Dali painting that I

usually picture when Iistening to this song too.

The name escapes me at the moment but it's the one where

the instruments are melted/melting and the women in white

dresses have flower boquets for heads.

ANd the Twinlights version of Pink Orange Red is--I can't even say.

Pink Orange Red was already a favorite and I was giddy with

excitement when I discovered the other version.

I remember grinning like a wild idiot at my boyfriend as well as slapping

the bed, and mentally thanking God again for the Cocteau Twins when I heard

it.

You get the picture.

It's just grrreat!

I would love it if they continue to re-do/rework their old songs.

Feet-like Fins was another favorite that I was very happy they re-did.

Anyway----

I hope you and everyone else on the list

has a Happy Holiday!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey- I have wanted to tell a funny Cocteau Twins story for some time...

Thank you, Maria, for beginning the thread. I had a blind date with a

guy at the beginning of this year. We went out a few times and it

seemed like things were going well. One night he came to pick me up for

a date and I was listening to The Moon and The Melodies. He asked who

the band was and I told him... I proceeded to say that if you could

turn my guts inside out that this (the music) is what they would look

like... he was quiet.... then a new song started and I was so overcome-

I said "Oh I LOVE this song" and he asked... what is the name of it? I

had to look on the CD case and almost died as I said "She Will Destroy

You"... on our next date he said he was too busy with work and could

not date me anymore...

Coincidence or Cocteau Twins????

That made me wonder if there could ever be a pre-dating Cocteau Twins

test....

I am so glad we have this list!

Happy Holidays!

Thankyou Raxalah!!!! You confirmfeelings I have, yet give me insight into

something that is very meaningful to me. I confess that in their music I

hear a zeal for this life that we all seem to share. Ironic optimism? I

don't know. It is true that I bring into my listening experience an agenda.

I tend to listen to music that somehow grounds me into reality. That

observable phenomenom that we're here for so long and then we 'are not ....

I've stumbled upon this group from sheer luck//////I was in a used record/cd

store in Chapel Hill, NC and heard them overhead...I had to ask of course, (as

I assume you would have, or did, when you first heard them...) I can't even

make out what Liz says, and that is important because I'm a big fan of

lyrics....but despite me not even knowing what she is singing about most of

the time, it matters little, cause I know she is singing to you and to

me...and I believe that Raxalah is quite right when he or she says that it is

what I (we) bring to the CT''s. music....so that is why I am quite confident

that you all are worth knowing cause we all have some distinct similarity and

we wouldn't go through all this effort to communicate...anyway,. thanks for

responding to my thoughts....Bobby Miller

Cocteau Twins...You either love them or you don't...I've read the mail.. I

should have not used the happy versus sad...analogy... what I picture for me

is music for the isolated...to me their music is cold. (Howz that? cold vs.

to the music something of ourselves....and we search to for music that is like

each of us. That is why I feel somewhat of a link to all of you. The ct's

music is very similar and if all of you like it ,then we all somehow share

I don't really pick favorites....but i find it is very difficult to reduce the

Cocteau sound to mere words.. Although everyone speaks in gushing superlatives

when it comes to this group, they are all too often inadequate when trying to

convey the way the music affects you. Believe me -- I know. I think

"spine-tingling" works well. Cocteau Twins seem to be in touch with that

special "something" and we all have the ability to perceive it - whatever "it"

is. Maybe "it" is undefinable, but the sound has certain elemental qualities

you can pinpoint. It spirals and swirls like unraveling galaxies of stars and

ripples out slowly like rings in water. Aurally complex, melodically

simple.....nuanced....surreal. Nothing harsh or abrupt...always graceful,

always mysterious.

One thing's for sure: When you play their music, the air molecules obey.

My favorite Twins songs seem to change weekly, but two consistant

favorites that aren't often mentioned are 'Mud and Dark', and

'Serpentskirt'. Each fitting a different mood than the other.

Here's a brain teaser for most fans......try to list your 5 favorite

Twins songs!

Happy Holly-days to all!!!

Well, I don't know about picking favorites as I'm sure many of us find that

difficult when concerning the Twins but these two tracks really stick out

in my mind and have largely influenced my opinion of Cocteau Twins' music

as HIGH ART:

"Sea, Swallow Me" off the Moon & the Melodies. The opening piano line

literally grabs me, and Liz's voice adds a frighteningly beautiful quality

to the music. Raw, yet complex, piercing and astonishing.

"Oomingmak" off Victorialand. Does anyone else agree that this is one of

the Twins' most original compositions? This track is sooooo beautiful, I

can barely get through it without swimming in my own tears. The even,

continuous guitar strumming reminds me of ripples and sends me soaring

through a dark sky. When Liz belts it out, my heart nearly bursts...

Yes! Yes! Yes! With all this talk of favorite songs I noticed

conspicuously that these two haven't recieved their proper overwhelming

praise. I have a tape single

that I erased and recorded "Sea, Swallow Me" and "Oomingmak" on one side

and "Tranquil Eye" and the instrumental version of "Ooomingmak" on the

other. Whenever I need a jolt of inspiration or just to be transported to

a another place, I play this tape over and over. These songs rip apart

the fabric of my reality every time and leave me shaking with the drain of

emotional release when a come back to Earth...

Very good call on those two, George!

Hello List-

A Happy Christmas/Hannukah/Kwanzaa/Solstice to all!

My current favorite Cocteau Twins song is definitely "Alice."

I have a wonderful tape made for the car that starts with "Alice" and

then follows with Bryan Ferry's "Dance with Life (The Brilliant Light)."

The chemistry between these two songs is really cool.

Other important CT songs for me include:

"Dials"

"Sigh's Smell of Farewell"

"Quisquose"

"Donimo"

"Pur"

"Treasure Hiding"

"Carolyn's Fingers"

"A Kissed out Red Float Boat"

"Blue Bell Knoll"

"Crushed" (reminds me of an old boyfriend from college...)

and of course, "Frosty the Snowman!"

Best albums? there are three: "Blue Bell Knoll," "Treasure," and "Milk

and Kisses."

BTW, thank you to the List members who warmly welcomed me to this List!

Hi, Greggie,

Welcome to Camp Cocteau! Raxalah, Ragout, Greg Smith, & I all are on

list & live in metro Atlanta...maybe we can all get together someday.

(Greg I met in person at HNIA last year.) Could you email privately to

tell me who are your fave Atlanta area bands? I'm always curious, since

I've been here only 2 years & have only found a few I like.

You really rang my chimes mentioning Mr. Syvian...I didn't know he had an

email list! I'd love to sub to it, for updates on new releases and such.

His is my favorite male voice in 15 years, with Peter Murphy a not too

distant second. Mr. Ferry ain't too shabby either!!!

Happy hollandaise,

Acknowledging the fact that you still like CT despite their gravitating

to decipherable lyrics is fine. But you make it clear that they are going

in a direction that you regret. Many on this list and fan forum bemoaned

the direction that CT seems to have taken post 4CC (and you date it back

to HOLV). That sentiment really came on strong after M & K. Knowing that

Simon, and to a lesser degree Robin, read the CT-related internet

postings routinely, it doesn't really surprise me that they themselves

may be questioning whether to continue as a band. Maybe the band is

taking the "hint" from their most ardent fans, the ones who

discuss/analyze their stuff almost religiously over the internet (that's

us folks).

I myself find the "lyrics" to be appealing in that they are such a

switch from the word-sound, and almost none of their most recent songs

have been 100% decipherable anyway. Most often the so-called "lyrics" are

abstract, like some of the best poetry of our times. Let's remember that

most artists...whether visual like Picasso or musical like CT... evolve

through different "periods", and their work reflects this evolution. One

period isn't necessarily better than another...they're just different.

And that's what makes art most interesting to me...watching the evolution

process.

Now, I was getting my hair cut this evening when the radio station

Atlanta... I thought I had a little secret songstress that NOBODY knew

Next thing ya know, Heidi Berry, Bryan Ferry, Jane Siberry (love those

The Mandarin singer FAYE WONG released a new album in October, and there

are 2 Cocteau Twins-written songs on it.

Just like her last album "Impatience", Faye covered the songs "Trainquil

Eye" (b side of Violaine) and the new song "Touch upon Touch" (which

cocteaus themselves later recorded, and it appeared on the UK

magazine/CD VOLUME (17).

This time around, the new self titled Faye album has Cocteau's

writing/doing the music on 2 tracks. "Entertainment ground" (aka

"amusement park"), and "Nostalgia" a cover of "rilkean heart".

"nostalgia" is just Faye and acoustic guitar, and the new song is kind

of like "Need Fire" off the Judge Dredd soundtrack. It' didn't excite

me too much.

i dont own 'need fire' and this new song is 'fair' but i could hear liz

singing it and enhacing it.

funny, but i actually like faye's vocalization on 'touch upon touch'

better than liz.

but hearing liz sing it live (the first time i heard it) was awesome....">>>

I was listening to "Wolf In The Breast" and at about 2:10 (on my cd player)

there's this spot where it sounds like Liz's vocals come in but are chopped

off, to be repeated and continued seconds later. Where the lyrics sound a bit

like, "Perpetual...I-(cut off)...I feel perpetual...True blue and real..."

Has anyone else noticed this? I find it strange and hard to believe that such

a well produced band would have made a mistake!

hi... I'm another newcomer to the list, and as for favourite CT songs I

say you can't go wrong with anything on 'Treasure' and 'Milk and Kisses'

These albums , in their entirety, are absolute perfection. I've

listened to both repeatedly for hours on end, many times over, and I

think they just get more intriguing (?) all the time. I believe I've

even brainwashed my wife with them... she used to say Liz's voice got on

her nerves after a while, but she's starting to give in (a bit anyway).

That's funny... are most couples like this? My wife used to start

mutterig incoherantly after continuous aural assaults of non-stop CT.

But I eventually wore her down to the point where she actually did give

I absolutely agree with the solitude thing......I listen to a constant diet of

the Twins, and have been known to play a song repetitively just to absorb all

of the tasty ear candy. I don't lik eto be bothered when I'm absorbing!!!! My

significant other actually had "Blue Bell Knoll" when we met, and likes the

Coc's -- but not as passionately as I. When I get together with other devout

Twinheads, it all Cocteau chat all the time. That can be overwhelming for a

bystander I guess!

I have the new Faye Wong CD and i have only found one track that has to to with

the CTs.

Track 4 (i can't read the title, they are three chinese symbols/letters)

"Performed by Simon Raymonde & Robin Guthrie

Simon Raymonde & Robin Guthrie appears courtesy of Cocteau Twins (Bella Union

Ltd.)

All vocals: Faye Wong

Recorded at September Sound, London"

BTW, IMHO is this album better than the solo-album from Simon...

I have not been able to find Faye's new lp anywhere in Atlanta. I had

heard that it was on EMI which is supposed to be connected to the HMV

stores...but the local HMV never heard of her. Where did you buy the cd?

A store?

yep i think that about does it. of course i like every twins song, but i

really was kinda bored with four calendar café and milk and kisses. not that

they dont have their share of good tunes, just that i think their peak has

passed. i really really liked otherness and twinlights and i would love to see

another "ambient" ep of re-mixed songs. here's a new topic, what songs would

everyone like to see re-mixed "otherness" style. i think donimo, or sugar

hiccup would be neat. maybe orange appled. well thats enough spew. later.

This sort of occurance has been happening to me for years... I remember

the first time I noticed was over 20 years ago listening to Alice

Cooper's 'Under My Wheels'. I could swear I heard my mother calling

"Mark!" midway through the song. I still hear it if I put it on today...

This is a bit different, but a friend of mine heard the Ramones' "I Wanna=

 Be

Sedated" as "I Want a Piece of Katy" -- Katy was his girlfriend at the =

time.

William Safire did a whole column on it (not my friend, the phenomenon). =

My

favorite example was the guy who heard "Lead on, O king eternal" as "Lead

on, O kinky turtle". That would make a great t-shirt!

I used to have those little ballerinas on my birthday cake *every* year!

BTW I hope you all know that the photographer for 4CC (Walter Wick) has

produced a series of beautiful children's books in that style.

They are called I SPY books. I'm sure the CT (being parents) saw his books

I gave a couple of the books as gifts to my youngest friends and relations.

Yes. DE stands for Deutschland.

But you can be lucky here, if you have a job. 15 percent of the workers are

As was ours, we too would have it no other way. Cocteau Twins were also at

the birth of our daughter (one year ago on January 2nd). She still often

goes to sleep listening to the Twins!!!! In fact, her middle name is

Elizabeth, in a meager homage to Liz!!

I can't hear it. At 2:00 I hear:

"I feel perpetual. I feel perpetual. I feel perpetual. I feel... I feel

The "feel" in the lone "I feel" is a little obscured, but it doesn't

sound cut to me.

I have another question. Does Liz say "Flock of Soul" in "Treasure

Hiding"?

It's at 2:47. I always thought it was "Love of Soul" but it occurred to

me reading

someone mentioning the song "Flock of Soul" that it could be that

instead as in

the "Before you Know who you are at every age" tradition.

What I want to know is: if unemployment is so high in Germany, how come I

run into so many Germans on extended travels in remote (for Germans)

places? Are there many independently wealthy folk there? Do Germans still

get tons of vacation time per year? (Perhaps due to lack of work there?)

Oh, my, this is *so* off topic...let's see...

Wonder what the unemployment rate is in Scotland? Wonder if members of CT

get to travel ever (beyond touring/work)?

Peace 'n luv,

That's so cool... I did the same for the birth of my first son 13 years

ago. I'm not sure if it helped my wife (she's not much of a CT fan), but

it helped ease the anxiety and helplesness a new dad feels.

Hello everyone,

=20

I have a vinyl copy of the 1982 interview Picture Disc with the Cocteau =

Twins (Liz, Robin and Simon) that I am placing up for sale.=20

=20

I have done some research on it to determine an asking price. Here is =

what I have discovered:

"This 12" vinyl disc (catalogue #BAK2016) was printed as a bootleg =

interview disc in 1982. The interview is with Robin, Liz, and Simon =

just following the release of Treasure. It is approximately 45 minutes =

long, it is available on vinyl and CD. What makes this item even more =

rare was that it was not an official release, and so it is considered a =

bootleg."

=20

I have only listened to this LP one time, therefore, it is in excellent =

condition. There is no record sleeve, other than a thick clear plastic =

sleeve. The LP has been stored in a well protected box for the past =

several years. Liz and Simon appear on one side, and Robin is on the =

other. =20

=20

Due to the rareness of this item and it's excellent condition, I am =

opening it up for bids beginning at $100.00 (US currency, COD, Money =

Order ONLY, shipping costs NOT included). =20

=20

I will take the highest bidder as of Sunday, January 4th, 7:00 p.m. (US =

Mountain Time). =20

Hope to hear from you soon...

I've only found them at cd stores out in the Buford/Norcross/Chamblee area.

I'll be sure to write down the name and address of one of them the next

Oh, and look out for bootlegs. After I bought a cd, I later saw what

appeared to be the same cd with 6 bonus tracks, but the store owner said

that it was a bootleg. (besides, it didn't have the CT sticker on the

wrapper).

I sold the CD version of this bootleg for $100. I know it's a 'rarity', but

it's really nothing special in terms of content or packaging. I taped the CD

and pocketed the cash. No problem there. Anybody who will pay $100 for CD

like this is probably a completionist and will not be dissuaded, but to others

I ask...

How many times will you actually listen to it?

How many times will you look at the picture disc?

Is it really $100 worth of recorded sound? Information?

It's not Cocteau music - just get someone to tape it for you. Having heard

this thing, I think $10 is a tad high.

speaking of the title of one song being in the lyrics of another, I was

watching the "Carolyn's Fingers" video the other day and I SWEAR when she

goes down real low in the chorus, she's saying "itchy glowbo." I'd never

noticed before...I wasn't actually really watching the TV, just kinda

listening, and suddenly it popped out into my ears. I rewound it and

watched her mouth, and I think that's what she's saying. Anyone else

see/hear it? Kinda like (lyrics from Borum) -- "you're just closer to me

when you fall...(pause, goes down real low)...*itchy glowbo*"

Maybe I'm smoking too much crack. :)

Ah-HA!!!!

you let that slip!! *smile*

but if the interview album is a 'bootleg' then surely the Twins will have no

control over wether its available or not, and anyway whoever has the masters

will quite likely press more copies when they realise people are grabbing up

any little bit of Cocteau-phernalia?????

so if theres more likely available why pay extortionate sums now???

I don't think it was crack induced, Laura. Just two days ago, while

watching the same video, I also thought that Liz sang "itchy glowbo".

And I haven't smoked crack in years.....honest.

Talking about kids. I''ve been playing milk and kisses in my car a lot when

I'm with my 2 year old daughter and the other day I heard some CT music coming

from her playroom. Somehow she had gotten a hold of the casette tape and

started playing it on her little tape recorder. I freaked and at the same

time I was really impressed. In fact, she can distinguish the difference

between CT and non-CT songs. I read that this was a good sign of potential

musical talent and just playing smarts. I really hope so.

Also, did anybody hear or read several years ago about how Liz Fraser took

her, then recently born baby into the studio for some of the HOLV sessions?

Is there any connection to the song Pitch the baby?

apparently "pitch the baby" refers not to the actual throwing of the poor

lucy belle but instead to liz pitching the idea of having a child at

robin...hence, "pitch the baby"!

Now, now, Pablo-

In 1984 I scored my first CT, Peppermint Pig EP, vinyl, used--whatever. I

was hooked! And quite soothed. Then again in '84 I was heavily into the

dead kennedys, bauhaus, coltrane, and bartok. So the twins were a welcome

mellow without the nod.

P.S. Perhaps the child, exposed to Liz and CT so early,, will later become

It's still a go. The first set of tapes have been sent to those helping

distribute it. I'm still waiting for a couple of people to get their

copies. Once that happens we will start collecting compensation for the

tapes/postage and begin mailing out to everyone else. Everything should be

well under way by next week. Just hang tight because you won't be

disappointed. Anybody with an advance copy care to share views?

my two cents on cocteau videos:

to be honest i think that most of their videos suck, and so do the band

members for that matter. all of the videos are worth watching but some

stand out more than others, especially the ones that simon's footage is

used for and the videos produced by "TOMATO" (underworld members).

personally i can't stand the video for bluebeard because it's so fuckin

computer generated and it's actually off-sync, liz is always a few seconds

ahead or behind the soundtrack. most of their videos are so "eighties"

perhaps that's the scary part, trying to figure out the amount of hairspray

used prior to the shoot! as for the aikea guinea video, it's interesting to

note that it was shot in russel mills' apartment......robin and russel are

currently working on a music project together!=20

i guess what i'm trying to say is.....get yourself some videos because they

are if anything entertaining. it's nice to have visuals to watch with your

favorite songs!

p.s.....i hope you all enjoy the "muscle and want" video after all of this

heavy criticism! *smirk*

I don't think anyone will be disappointed with this video, unless of

course they are expecting a 'studio quality' production. The promos are

of excellent video quality, but it should be understood that the rarer,

live stuff is not first or second generation copies. For those with

HiFi VCRs, you're in for a real treat since much of the video is in HiFi

stereo (which is the equivalent of DAT). What was really interesting to

me is how the reel-to-reel tape deck seemed to be the '4th Cocteau' in

most of the vids. The "Heaven or Las Vegas" video alone is worth the

compensatory cost of the video, and Stratton did an excellent editing

job on this collection.

no...."muscle and want" is not available on this particular video

compilation, i just finished editing it a few days ago! more details about

this will be available shortly. as for other videos from BSE....the only

one i've seen is for "in my place" which simon showed me at september

sound....it's apparently an homage to the film "night of the hunter" but

seeing as this is my all time favorite movie i would have to disagree, the

director didn't do it justice and besides...it was shot on videotape, half

of the joy of watching "night of the hunter" is the b&w filmic qualities. =

=20

oh and a little note......since i'm due to give birth in about 8 weeks i've

decided that baby's middle name will be "hunter" (for "night of the

hunter") and my first son's name is aidan "kane" (for citizen kane)!

Wow... this really blew my brain! I even had to laugh!!!

First off, I believe it was a tape with 'Head over Heels' and 'Treasure'

(I find Treasure incredibly soothing, it's still my favourite).

All my kids like the Twins... not nuts about them like myself, but they

don't run screaming from the house or hurl themselves out of the car

whenever I play their music.

And now the funny part ... my kids LOVE the Dead Kennedys (and the

Pistols, Exploited,Misfits etc.) The oldest thinks Jello and Johnny are

gods... life is strange

Good News, On a recent foray to Seattle, I found Treasure, which was top

on my priorities list. Needless to say, I'm thrilled. It had been at

least 2 years since I had last heard Pandora, my favorite of the cd and

of all CT that I've heard. Soothing, relaxing, serene. My

motto....Treasure is Pleasure". Ahhhh.....

I lost all of my computer, seriously, while I was gone to Seattle, power

outage while I was gone and I do leave my computer on allways......

Berk, I believe you had offered to help me get cd's and for that I thank

you! Also, whoever posted the message with the info on CD Now accepting

cash payments, thank you too! I'm going to see what they have to offer,

but as far as what they don't have, I'd like to turn to you Berk, or

Hey....I've also seen much posted about a video. Is that something that

I can get as well?

Everyone, I hope that today brings a wonderful close to a hopefully

wonderful year, and opens a door to an even better year than ever. Best
