I loved your poem. Wow, Ana, your email from tomorrow arrived today! Considering the poem, well, considering time and cocteauspace, that's funnnnky. And the paper should be swallowed, IMHO. :P Just this weekend I bought a 1958 tape deck for a price the seller and I agreed upon. Both being happy, we exchanged money and deck. If we were not happy, we wouldn't have. (It was less than the current offer on Bluebeard) :) Why did I EVEN comment? Hell, it's fun to see the list burble, and from two addresses, too! WOW, 35 dollars, is that the going rate? For the Bluebeard single? I remember buying it for five dollars at Walmart, but that was a few years ago after all. It comes as a surprise here as well; I recently bought Bluebeard used at a local record store for $6. If Bluebeard's that valuable, I'm even happier with my purchase....And I envy anyone who finds Cocteau Twins singles at their local = Wal-Mart stores; $17 copies of Bryan Adams' "Waking Up the Neighbors" are about the most non-mainstream recordings you'll find at Wal-Marts in the Tampa Bay area. Then again, at least that gives me yet another reason to patronize locally owned record stores. ...Brian (in his very first post to this list ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 2 Dec 1997 08:54:10 +0100 Reply-To: Cocteau Twins Discussion List Sender: Cocteau Twins Discussion List From: Ruud Subject: set cocteau-l digest

The market determines the price. This limited EP is out of print, and it has two exclusive cuts that are as good as anything they've ever done (Fact: Cocteau Twins do not make b-sides.) I have a copy - I bought it when it was released. If you managed to get your hands on one for $35.00, consider yourself lucky. People like me don't give 'em up too often. Also, consider the utility value. You'll probably play this CD much more than you would some lesser band's CD, so you're getting your money's worth no matter how you slice it. Thanks - the only Cocteau disc I was ever willing to part with was the "Conversation Series" Interview Disc - someone gave me $100.00 for it. I wouldn't sell "Bluebeard" or any of their rare CD's even at that price. The conversation disc was not their music, and I was able to tape the contents should I ever be inclined to listen again. Since I'm not the completionist type (one copy of each song will do quite nicely, thank you), it's wasn't a big decision. Not like the interview benefits from the CD format or anything. Hi Doug and Everyone! I'm surprised by your "fact", so I'm going to nitpick over terminology. I have a feeling that you think "b-side" is a derogatory term. But, what's the difference between "exclusive cuts" & "b-sides"? The terminology (cut, single, b-side, EP, LP, album) we still use is no longer exact because of the downfall of vinyl (there is no a- or b-side of a cd single). But, even on CD, I would call "Echoes in a Shallow Bay" an EP, and "Bluebeard" a single. So the other tracks on "Bluebeard" are b-sides. This said, COCTEAU TWINS' B-SIDES ARE THEIR BEST WORK!! Au contraire mon Amy.....think the term "b-side" refers to cuts included on a CD that are "extra" - i.e., they are not covered by the title of the work. Examples? "Bluebeard" and "Evangeline" - the titles of these CD singles does not make reference to or cover the two extra, exclusive cuts contained on both. The extra cuts would be considered "b-sides". Like "Echoes In A Shallow Bay", those discs are also considered EP's because they fall short of being a full album, but offer more than a traditional single containing two cuts (an "A" and a "B" side cut). The difference with "Echoes" is that none of the songs get individual focus - the title covers all of the tracks, not just one featured track. To me, the term b-side has a slight negative connotation. It used to be a song that didn't make the album cut - an outtake. So when I say CT doesn't make b-sides, that's just saying that I think all of the songs have equal merit. There are no throwaways. (BTW, i have a cd-SINGLE from ROllins that clocks in at 63 minutes. that singel was longer than the Twins last album. granted, i have more live versions of Rollins on CD than i can shake a stick at, but there you are...) why in Hank's name are we discussing this anyway???? Hey, guys -- they're called b-sides because they're b-side the point of buying the single. Like, if you buy "My Sharona" it's to hear "My = Sharona" & whatever the hell else they stuck on there was b-side the point. So, on "Bluebeard" we can say that the track "Bluebeard" is the b-side, since we all already have it on 4CC, & it's entirely b-side the point of why we would ay out $35 bucks to mmmender for the disk. Singles are rarely 'in print' per se. Usually, cd singles are pressed (maybe 'burned' is a better word) once and that's it. When an album is in print (like a book) the masters are held by the record company and they will re-press the album if sales warrant. Singles usually don't sell enough for second pressings, so they don't bother. Elton John's "Candle In The Wind" is a good example of a multi-pressing single. So usually, by the time you actually first see a single in a store, it's already "out of print". How ever many copies are pressed/burned and released, that's all there is. So, what your question REALLY is: What singles are still available as new unwrapped releases? There are lots of copies of Iceblink Luck available still because it was released domestically. Bluebeard and Evangeline were not, hence fewer copies. Same goes for the Tishbite and Violaine singles, although I think there were more copies of all four, than there were of the 4CC singles. 'Snow' was a small pressing as well, maybe no more than 5,000 copies - that's why it's so rare. Supply and demand. It also justifies the high prices being demanded for second hand copies of these hard-to-find singles. It's true that despite vinyl's downfall we have still been using the old terms (especially us old school collectors!) to identify those additional tracks. While true it's easier to refer to them as B-sides, it does'nt truly apply anymore--as Cds can only be utilized from one side and not both as a vinyl record would have. I think the term I see in use more often than not now is "Non-LP" track--meaning that these songs, while certainly not throwaways, outtakes or anything remotely negative are just tracks without an album to call "home". I always personally look forward to the Non-Lp tracks as they go towards extending the pleasure of listening to certain time period in a band's career. They can often surprise and show you sides to an artist or band that probably was not reflected in the "home" LP. ========================================================================= Date: Thu, 4 Dec 1997 09:36:24 -0500 Reply-To: Cocteau Twins Discussion List Sender: Cocteau Twins Discussion List From: fotzepolitic Subject: singles

Thank you for an intelligent response, Jef-Marcel! I think I've heard that CT choose the material for an LP according to the quality of the track and which ones they feel best represent their current style, fits in with the rest of the work. This means their Non-LP tracks are always interesting! This makes me crave everything ever recorded by them! However, I understand that they pretty much release everything in some form, don't they? Oh, I can think of something people may not have heard: the the short bits of music inbetween "Rilkean Heart" and "Half-Gifts" in the video. Bootleg CD makers: Those tunes, and the "Fruitopia" song should be on your next release! They can often surprise and show you sides to an artist or band that probably was not reflected in the "home" LP. ========================================================================= Date: Thu, 4 Dec 1997 21:35:48 +0100 Reply-To: Cocteau Twins Discussion List Sender: Cocteau Twins Discussion List From: Klaus Subject: Blaubart
Hallo Listies, the CD-Maxi "bluebeard" (Blaubart is the german translation) is not so rare. You can it by (as new CD, not used) by Mailorder (Disc-Center) here in Germany. For only 8,99 DM (actually a little more as 5 US$)... Keep your eyes better open for real rare things, Simons Maxi-CD (Bella CD2) is limited, but at time in the shops... Maybe in a year is it too late for that.. to anyone intrested: i have a copy of bluebeard, otherness, twinlights and the video "lonely is an eyesore", all items are UNOPENED(from my days as a manager of a music store). i would be willing to sell all of these as a package(just in time for the holidays :) ) i dont really want to part with them but they are doubles and i could use the xtra cash for the holidays. so if anyone would like to give the gift of cocteau to a friend or loved one(or just to oneself) e-mail me at my address and i'll sell to the highest bidder(bid what you feel is a reasonable price)..i'll end the bidding on tues. dec. 9th to insure that enough time is left to complete the transaction and send it out before xmas. i hope this will help someone with their shopping or make their xmas a merry one...so goodnight to all and all a goodnight. J. lutz p.s. in case someone has never heard of the "lonely is an eyesore" video: it is a video comp. from 4ad with video's directed by nigel grierson(of 23 envelope, who was responsible for the artwork on the cocteau twins albums up until their move to capital). the artists on the video include: cocteau twins ,dead can dance, this mortal coil, clan of xymox, dif juz, the wolfgang press, colourbox and throwing muses. pretty cool stuff with very cool package design. well i've gotten quite few bids for the bluebeard, loney is an eyesore, otherness, and twinlights package but a few have said that they would rather bid on each item seperatly. my original idea was to make it a package deal bidding on bluebeard and the video with the two other eps thrown in as a bonus(that way if you already had them, i thought they would make great gifts this xmas for someone)....but since it seems that a lot of you want to bid on one or the other..i guess that's the way it will go. so here's a break down of the bidding so far: 1) bluebeard-$38 2) lonely is an eyesore-$40 as to the other two eps i've decided to give them away in the holiday spirit to whom ever emails me first. to those who bid, i will e-mail you back with an update on the bidding on monday..bidding will stop at 6:00 e.s.t. on dec 9th. i will notify the winner(s) by e-mail after 8:00 that night. i send the cd/video the same day i recieve payment for them(i will send the otherness/twinlights eps out to that winner the same day) well as my friend from down under would say:"cheers big ears" j.lutz EMITPULSE@JUNO.COM ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 5 Dec 1997 16:32:12 -0800 Reply-To: Cocteau Twins Discussion List Sender: Cocteau Twins Discussion List From: Doug Moon Subject: Re: items for sale

Since some people have obviously deleted the one they originally received I am forwarding this to the list again. Apologies to those who still have it. If you don't, PLEASE don't delete this OR the commands list to follow. You WILL need this information at some point. Revised: November 1997 List owner: stratton@ballistic.com Welcome to the mailing list devoted to discussion of the Cocteau Twins. Enclosed in this mail is some very useful information that you will undoubtably need at some point during your stay here. Please don't delete this message. This list has been around since the Fall of 1995. It was originally started at the University of Indiana. Due primarily to the exposure it got through the official website, Treasure(), it quickly grew and became an important alternate forum for discussion of the music(past and present), the band, side projects, tours, fan experiences, how to find rarities, making new friends, etc. If it's related to Cocteau Twins(or any of the members of the band) then it's usually discussed here...often before anywhere else. The list has gone through several transitions since it first began. It now has over 300 members worldwide. Volume for this list has ranged from very high to very low. You may see as many as fifty plus messages a day during record release and touring periods. On the other side of the spectrum, you may see only a couple of messages a day during the off periods. The average seems to be about ten, however. If you don't want to have your inbox filled with all of these as they are individually posted to the list, then there is a digest form that is distributed every 24 hours at 10 pm US Pacific time. Details on how to enable that command, as well as several others, will be outlined in a separate message you receive from the listserv. There are some basic rules and guidelines(aside from general netiquette) for this list that should be considered at all times. First of all, respect your fellow list members. Flaming is completely unacceptable and won't be tolerated. If you don't agree with something someone has to say, feel free to express your opinions, but do it in a constructive way. Most people enjoy reading a good debate. English is the language of choice on this list, but there are undoubtably some here who are fluent in other languages too. While the occasional non-English post may pop up, it should be remembered that they will most likely serve no importance for the majority of list members. When you are replying to a message that was sent to you via the list, the program is set up to send your message back to the list. Take a minute to decide if what you are replying to is intended for the entire list or just the individual who originally posted. If it's only for the person who originally posted, then you will need to readdress within your email program before you send it out. Following a thread on the list can become very confusing if you don't use correct subject headers when posting a message. If you are replying to the list, make sure your subject header states the topic of your message. It's very easy for a thread to change course and become a totally different conversation. Likewise, if you are posting something that is unrelated to the Cocteau Twins, then you should always put this before your actual subject: NON CT: This is not to encourage off-topic posts but rather give you an acceptable means of doing so if you feel it's warranted. If you are going to go on vacation or plan to be away from your email account for a considerable length of time, it's highly recommended that you suspend the list mail. This doesn't unsubscribe you from the list, it only turns off your mail delivery until you reset it. If you don't take this precaution and your inbox fills up, then you will start bouncing mail off the listserv...and that's not cool. To suspend mail send the following message to the listserv address(LISTSERV@WEBNT.CKS.COM): SET COCTEAU-L NOMAIL To reset for mail delivery send this message: SET COCTEAU-L MAIL To unsubscribe from this list send a message to the same address with this command: SIGNOFF COCTEAU-L Feel free to send a message introducing yourself to the list. We're all glad you joined and look forward to getting to know you. If you have any further questions, comments or ideas feel free to contact me. See you online! Stratton Davis, List Administrator ========================================================================= Date: Sat, 6 Dec 1997 11:28:41 -0600 Reply-To: Cocteau Twins Discussion List Sender: Cocteau Twins Discussion List From: Stratton Davis Subject: CT list commands....DON'T delete! Please take note that the list address and listserv address have changed(as has been posted to the list several times). If you still have your old copy of this message please delete it and keep this one instead. Thanks much...Stratton Your subscription to the COCTEAU-L list (Cocteau Twins Discussion List) has been accepted. Please save this message for future reference, especially if this is the first time you subscribe to an electronic mailing list. If you ever need to leave the list, you will find the necessary instructions below. Perhaps more importantly, saving a copy of this message (and of all future subscription notices from other mailing lists) in a special mail folder will give you instant access to the list of mailing lists that you are subscribed to. This may prove very useful the next time you go on vacation and need to leave the lists temporarily so as not to fill up your mailbox while you are away! You should also save the "welcome messages" from the list owners that you will occasionally receive after subscribing to a new list. To send a message to all the people currently subscribed to the list, just send mail to COCTEAU-L@WEBNT.CKS.COM This is called "sending mail to the list", because you send mail to a single address and LISTSERV makes copies for all the people who have subscribed. This address (COCTEAU-L@WEBNT.CKS.COM) is also called the "list address". You must never try to send any command to that address, as it would be distributed to all the people who have subscribed. All commands must be sent to the "LISTSERV address", LISTSERV@WEBNT.CKS.COM It is very important to understand the difference between the two, but fortunately it is not complicated. The LISTSERV address is like a FAX number that connects you to a machine, whereas the list address is like a normal voice line connecting you to a person. If you make a mistake and dial the FAX number when you wanted to talk to someone on the phone, you will quickly realize that you used the wrong number and call again. No harm will have been done. If on the other hand you accidentally make your FAX call someone's voice line, the person receiving the call will be inconvenienced, especially if your FAX then re-dials every 5 minutes. The fact that most people will eventually connect the FAX machine to the voice line to allow the FAX to go through and make the calls stop does not mean that you should continue to send FAXes to the voice number. People would just get mad at you. It works pretty much the same way with mailing lists, with the difference that you are calling hundreds or thousands of people at the same time, and consequently you can expect a lot of people to get upset if you consistently send commands to the list address. You may leave the list at any time by sending a "SIGNOFF COCTEAU-L" command to LISTSERV@WEBNT.CKS.COM You can also tell LISTSERV how you want it to confirm the receipt of messages you send to the list. If you do not trust the system, send a "SET COCTEAU-L REPRO" command and LISTSERV will send you a copy of your own messages, so that you can see that the message was distributed and did not get damaged on the way. After a while you may find that this is getting annoying, especially if your mail program does not tell you that the message is from you when it informs you that new mail has arrived from COCTEAU-L. If you send a "SET COCTEAU-L ACK NOREPRO" command, LISTSERV will mail you a short acknowledgement instead, which will look different in your mailbox directory. With most mail programs you will know immediately that this is an acknowledgement you can read later. Finally, you can turn off acknowledgements completely with "SET COCTEAU-L NOACK NOREPRO". Following instructions from the list owner, your subscription options have been set to "MIME" rather than the usual LISTSERV defaults. For more information about subscription options, send a "QUERY COCTEAU-L" command to LISTSERV@WEBNT.CKS.COM Contributions sent to this list are automatically archived. You can get a list of the available archive files by sending an "INDEX COCTEAU-L" command to LISTSERV@WEBNT.CKS.COM You can then order these files with a "GET COCTEAU-L LOGxxxx" command. This list is available in digest form. If you wish to receive the digested version of the postings, just issue a SET COCTEAU-L DIGEST command. Please note that it is presently possible for anybody to determine that you are signed up to the list through the use of the "REVIEW" command, which returns the e-mail address and name of all the subscribers. If you do not want your name to be visible, just issue a "SET COCTEAU-L CONCEAL" command. More information on LISTSERV commands can be found in the LISTSERV reference card, which you can retrieve by sending an "INFO REFCARD" command to LISTSERV@WEBNT.CKS.COM ========================================================================= Date: Sat, 6 Dec 1997 18:54:06 +0100 Reply-To: Cocteau Twins Discussion List Sender: Cocteau Twins Discussion List From: Klaus Subject: bluebeard CDs here

I have similar issues. I don't really have much in the way of tradeable goods. I realize that selling your video might be considered unethical. A video compilation from the band themselves would be a god-send for someone like me who has never seen a video from their favorite band. To share some info: I received an email from Mmmmmmender saying that the Cocteau Twins will be putting a video together in the near future, but she couldn't say more, i guess because it isn't official yet. To Mickey in the UK - yes, I would be interested in receiving a copy of what you have. However, before we all start trading & copying videos, would it be easier to just wait until the Twins put out their 'official' video compilation? I hope I haven't upset anyone by sharing information - but that's what this list is for, right? Simon has spoken of a video compilation and a B-Side compilation being in the works. Getting these things from the drawing board to fruition is no easy task considering the legalities involved, but I think both of these things will be addressed. I told her about 'Snow', gave her the disc, and I almost had a heart-attack when she walked off with it because that is the only copy I have and it took me almost 5 years to locate. She listened to it and said she thought it was nice... NICE!!!!!!! Oh well, I guess I will have to realize one day or another that brilliant, genius, etc., will not be in some people's vocabulary when it comes to the Twins. I found a copy on CD of "The Moon and the Melodies," "Lonely is an Eyesore" compilation, and tons of old imports (Fields of the Nephilim, Cabaret Voltaire, Kate Bush, etc....) in the bargain bin at Sam Goody for only $3.99. So, to anyone out there that might not have a copy of those you might definitely want to go check it out. Maybe perhaps Musicland might be included in that since they are both from the same company. I agree with you about live acoustic instruments...that's why Twinlights grabbed me so, and trax on TMC with acoustic string instruments. I also love real drums...one of my fave bands (now friends) here in metro Atlanta, The Changelings, is a goth/darkwave group featuring a real drummer that plays with timpani mallets. I really love the effect. Anyway, welcome to the list...look forward to your musings (and musettes). This is *not* a dub of his compilation. All of the promo videos from 'Carolyn's Fingers' on are in stereo/hi-fi format(most of them dubbed straight off the Capitol promos). Even much of the early footage(Tube, Whistle Tests) is in stereo/hi-fi format as well. I know it's hard to believe but I recently tracked this stuff down. With the exception of maybe the early Brixton footage(which is great simply because you see a 19 year old Liz wearing a black leather mini-skirt and ankle boots while beating the floor with her hands in some sort of 'speed frenzy'!) this should all be very enjoyable to watch. There's a couple of things I've been pondering lately about this song. I'm just curious if anyone else has wondered and/or come up with the same. First of all, I was thinking about the title and what it might mean. This track is probably the most 'lyrically intelligible' to me off the HOLV album. One of the feelings I get from it is that Liz was expressing thanks to her newborn child, Lucy, for making things better in her life. With that in mind, I started to wonder if maybe the title was referring to her good fortune. We all know that Liz has the most amazing 'iceblue' eyes. Maybe 'Iceblink' is a nickname someone gave her? Maybe it's a nick she gave herself? The 'blink' aspect comes back into play with the song 'Summerblink'...which is another song about Liz and how she's making things better in her life. Maybe this has been discussed before and I just missed it. The other thing that I keep coming back to is a phrase in the song. I know many people sort of take it for granted that the lyrics go, 'and you're the match of jericho that will burn this whole madhouse down...' What I've been thinking lately is that maybe she's saying, 'and you're the match - choke - cherry coal, that will burn this whole madhouse down'. It's more a thought progression...if you see what I mean. I've been listening to the song and it really seems to work. Plus, I've never been able to figure out what the hell 'jericho' was referring to. Any other thoughts on the matter? I always accepted the 'Jericho' thing, but never really thought that was what I was hearing. Always sounded like something about cherry cola to me. But you can hear the "ch" sound of cherry, and the L of coal phonicly matches the L of whole(..lighthouse down). A later verse has the pauses (breaths) in different places "...match of cherry coal that will burn...this ol' madhouse...down on the floor", and in that verse you can hear 'cherry coal' even more clearly. Liz must have been into a 'fire thing' during the HOLV days. ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 14 Dec 1997 18:47:04 -0500 Reply-To: Cocteau Twins Discussion List Sender: Cocteau Twins Discussion List From: Tad Rollow Subject: Re: Iceblink musings These lyrics we're talking about are, for me, right in and through one of the most wonderful cadences I hear in their music. (Well, I fantasize about other things, too, but that's my CT dream...) This big peak in the song comes as Liz is screwing completely with the rhythmic placement of these cherry cola lines - she sings something in there that slides them to a WEIRD place in the meter - she's a genius - I'm convinced it was done completely intuitively, too. Along with Mizake the Mizan and Watchlar this is one of my most favoritest EPs of theirs. I usually think of HOLV as a completely different mood, but now I'm not so sure :) Zarbet ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 14 Dec 1997 15:55:22 -0800 Reply-To: Cocteau Twins Discussion List Sender: Cocteau Twins Discussion List From: Stephen O Jacinto Subject: Re: otherness Hey Leesa, =09You probably got answered by many before me.
