Michael,

I wasn't referring to Kate and Prince. I was trying to convey that Liz Fraser
and Kate Bush are a more likely collaboration since I read several years ago
that the CT turned down an offer by Prince to work together.

I also agree. Somehow aikea-guinea reminds me of an anthem but more like a
parade or carousel in which Liz is leading and singing with confetti all
around.
What about Kookaburra? Now this song has an unbelievable edge to it,
something I have not heard from them recently.

If anyone has these lyrics I would LOOOOOoooove to read them!

I read in an interview in Details years'n'years ago, which mentioned the
Japanese record company's innacurate "lyrics" for Garlands; I only remember
"Yeah baby I'm a mud dancer" and "Hit me with your aeroplane".

Wouldn't it be great to get one of these old Japanese pressings, and sing
along to Garlands in Japlish!?

i would LOVE it, if everyone on this list could submit their lyrical
translation of their favourite cocteau song! it would certainly be a great
read!! i'd start with "suckling the mender"-- "..louie cannot go/for you we
have birth control/teenage sex me, whore!"

well, once again i appear to make only myself chuckle...

on the topic of burning a cd.......you should all be pleased to know that
i'm pressing a live cocteau twins bootleg of my soundboard recording, and
i'm calling it "live gifts". it's an amazing quality live bootleg recorded
from the HOLV tour. i'm getting this cd done professionally, with digital
mastering and a full-colour sleeve insert. i don't have any info.
regarding prices yet, hopefully i can keep it as cheap as possible, i'm
still looking into that but i thought i'd let you all know about it, as
soon as i have more details, you'll hear from me.

Hey,
I've got "In Our Angelhood (remix)", unfortunately the tape is in the
UK ,and I now live in the USA so it may take a while to dig it out. I
also have "Void Of Voice (My Hue & Cry)" from the "Unrealised Dreams"
pic disc boot, the "Lovers Are Mortal" boot, and a couple of JP
sessions. I don't have a Technics, but I do have a Thorens 280 Mk IV
deck, a CD player with digital outs, and a DAT machine which I'm
willing to pitch in with.

Neil Impelluso and I were talking about doing something like this
too...but
we were thinking of burning it to CD-R. What do you guys think about
that?
I know Neil has the capability to burn CD's but it might help if
there
were some others who volunteered in order to ease the burden of
distribution. He and a few other people did something just like this
recently on the Lush mailing list. We could even include some of the
better quality live television like the 'Seekers' performance from
The
White Room, the MTV Europe stuff from '95, the Snub-TV stuff from '91,
etc.
I've also got a mint copy of 'Scream' which has some nice
demos/alternate
versions as well as the cover of 'Strange Fruit' and 'My Hue and Cry'.
 If
someone has access to a Technics 1200 then we could get a really clean
copy
of all the vinyl...

I'd just like to share something with you I found at my local record
store Amoeba in San Francisco yesterday.
Whilst browsing through the clearance videos I found a bunch of videos
called "Rock Video Monthly" from Warners.
They are compilations (maybe they're the things labels send to MTV, I
don't know) with about 10 bands on each. I managed to find 3 of
interest, one with "Evangeline", one with "Bluebeard", and one with
(sigh) "Yulunga" by Dead Can Dance, and they were only $1.95! So all
of you people in the USA get searching (unless you've already taped
'em off the telly or getting the comp vid).

i am going to throw in my two cents.....

okay, when you start burning CD and sell them (even at cost), you begin to
undermine the integrity of the gift that was given to you and the cocteau
twins. sure, they don't release live albums on cd and you're doing the fans
a favor, but what happens when the bootleg cd becomes very popular and the
twins want to release a live cd? Considering that you know the twins, i
can't imagine them you doing them a favor by selling CD of their live
material. i have had the capability to burn CD for quite a while and
refrain from using it to populate the world with the same bootleg that you
have (which i believe i gave to you, but correct me if i am wrong). in
position, i could very much capitalize on my relationship with the twins,
but i have not made a penny off their back and share their music in a way
to not harm their livelihood. i can understand if you want to make a cd for
yourself and a few close friends, but offering it for sale in a community
will surely bring about repercussions later on. i ask you to reconsider
your offer of generosity.

Ok I own a record label so I have heard this argument and totally understand
what you are saying. However, I don't think one person on this list wouldn't
rush out and buy a live CT album released by the band, even if it is the same
recording and quality of the bootleg. The artwork alone would justify the
purchase. Take a band like the Grateful Dead or Metallica, who allowed their
shows to be recorded and bootlegged. Each released live albums at some point
and it would be hard to justify an argument that bootlegging hurt their
careers. We are lucky enough to live in a digital age where we can make exact
duplications of audio recordings....but there is nothing like going out to the
record store and picking up the new release by your favorite band. I had
abootlegged copy of Prince's "Black Album" on CD long before he made it an
official release. I still rushed out with all the other fans to pick it up
the day it came out officially.

At any rate, I think that the assumption that making up this bootleg and
giving it out will hurt CT's career is simply incorrect, and I hope that they
would agree with me. I can't wait to hear the bootleg!

Just my two cents....

the commercial success of the grateful dead and metallica doesn't compare
to the twins. although the twins are by no means starving artists, i know
enough to know that they run various enterprises to keep afloat as artists.
of course bootlegs wouldn't hurt a career (would help them if they were up
and coming band), but i am talking about the bottom line of money and the
declining stream of revenue to them as artists. i do wish them commercial
success for the gift that we have given us. I've seen the numbers of their
best selling album and it's simply amazing how they compare to other bands
these days(that is to say that there number one is a drop in the bucket for
metallica). they have a cult following and our virtual community can make a
difference in how we affect their lives. whether it be bootlegs, rumors or
contributions, it gets around to them.

my previous email was not mean as an attack on mender by an mean, but i do
feel that this community as a whole should take about the repercussion of
her generosity. for once, that cd gets out, who will stop the careless
capitalist from duplicating that cd and sell it a lot more to the mass
public....

I have to agree with Jack in this instance. The recordings in question were made by
Cocteau Twins, not by some bootlegger. They recorded songs at the soundboard, not in
the audience. They are very high quality. What is at issue here is whether or not the
people making the CD's have the express permission of the Twins to do so. The Twins
gave a few (?) copies out as gifts, and then a few copies were made of those. The
people in possession of these tapes know they aren't supposed to copy them. Anyway,
the point is that once the cat is out of the bag, there's no stopping some
unscrupulous bootlegger from taking these pristine recordings and mass producing
them. It would be the bootleg the end all bootlegs - they are that good. The Twins,
who busted their collective asses to MAKE THIS MUSIC, WON'T SEE A GODDAMNED PENNY.

NOW, I KNOW YOUR INTENTIONS ARE GOOD, but once you do this, the songs will be
available to anyone. Right now, they are not. Mender, did Simon tell you it's okay to
do this? I know they don't plan on releasing anything on their label, but this takes
away their right to change their minds.

Proceed with extreme caution, and be sure of what you are doing.

i must say i agree with dax and mark. i will buy any bootleg, and any
official release from the twins themselves. since it seems that "official"
releases from the twins are going to be dwindling.....well, all i have to say
is BOOTLEG AWAY!! i can understand jack's point, but it is not as if mender
has a copy of their next CD and is willing to bootleg it before official
release.

It doesn't matter what you will buy. You have still adversely affected the market
value of material that, in the end, is not yours. That's the only consideration. You
may buy everything, but most people would be satisfied with just one copy, regardless
of whether it is official or not.

To those who received the tapes as gifts.....is this really how you want to thank
them?

We're not talking about making 1000s of copies, here . . . the 240-odd fans
subscribed to this list surely must be a drop in the bucket compared to the
1000s that would also be interested (if only they knew). And not all of the
240 listees are going to be interested . . .

Saying that there is a possibility that the Gifts CD might fall into the
wrong
hands is simply nay-saying. Milk and Kisses, to be sure, has already fallen
into the wrong hands in Signapore (or somewhere) and is being booted
and there's nothing that we can do about that (except to buy from reputable
shops).

It's *that* kind of bootlegging that takes the royalties out of the band's
pockets,
not the unofficial distribution of concerts among "fans" (that *is* what all
240
of us are, right? Not pirates, not money grubbing traitors) . . . I, for
one, would
never sell my copy of the Gifts CD! A band cannot lose royalties and their
record companies cannot lose profits unless the material in question is an
official release. The inflated estimates of losses due to concert piracy
are
totally fabricated. It's like a major US abel saying, had we signed that
band
that decided to go indie, we could have made millions and the only reason
that the indie label only made $30,000 was due to lack of promotion. If
they
put that kind of thing on their tax forms as a capital loss, the IRS would
be
knocking on their door a few months later, briefcases in hand.

Remember that without promotion, concert boots are only interesting to fans.
Next remember that if the CTs ever did decide to release this particular
show,
they would probably do some tinkering with it (remixing or digital cleaning)
and it would be of even higher quality than mmmender's tape and therefore,
would be then much more attractive than the boot. Also, it might be only
released partially, or on a live CD that takes its material from various
shows.

Take for example, the CT box set and the CD bootleg--the name escapes me
now--"Lost Treasures?", but anyway, the boot had a number of the EPs on it,
just like the box set. However, I'm sure that the box set sold much much
better,
despite the boot, and maybe even because of it. What fan, after having had
a
small taste of the box set, couldn't help but run out to get the full
version?

Incidently, the Twins didn't know when giving these gifts whether eventually
the
tape would fall into the wrong hands; if they're not worried about it, then
why
should we be worried for them? Not only that, but while no profit will be
made
on mmmender's CD, who among us wouldn't have picked it up if we saw a
bootlegged version at a record convention and didn't have the more "honest"
copy?

There's probably a lot more I could argue here, but for the sake of
bandwidth,
I'll just say that I think mmmender's generosity has been demonstrated over
and over to each fan on this list, and to blast her for her sharing her
Gifts with
us is ungrateful indeed!

well, i've been dragged over the coals enough for one day on this issue but
i feel i have to respond to all of the comments about the cd i was planning
on putting together.

first off, i think you all know that i am one of the most dedicated cocteau
twins fans on the planet and i would never dream of doing anything that
would jeopardize my relationship with the band, which is what some of you
are suggesting. my intention here is not to make money, not at all, so if
that's what some of you are thinking....think again. if that were the
case, why didn't i offer to sell the 'interesting' out-takes and behind the
scenes footage that i posess from my recent visit to september sound during
the "muscle and want" film shoot? i'm certain that would have made me a
mint. but i do have some integrity and most importantly, i have the utmost
respect for the band for allowing me access to their studio and their
private lives.

my intention with the 'live gifts' bootleg was merely to offer other fans
access to something that they long to have, which is a superb live
recording of their favorite band in concert! for most of us, it captures an
experience that we've already had and brings back fond memories of concerts
gone by. for others who've never seen a show, it offers them a taste of
the cocteaus live. is that really so horrid?

i'm truly sorry if any of you felt that my offer was an attempt at
monopolizing on the cocteau twins. i wasn't planning on pressing a zillion
copies and selling them worldwide, i was merely going to see how many
people were interested and work out the price of the disc divided by that
number. isn't that exactly what was done recently with the video
compilation? did the twins make any money from that deal? i think not! i
could easily make an audiotape of the show and ship them off but i just
thought it would be nice to have it mastered along with a nice cover.

forgive me for causing such an uproar but due to this overwhelming
negativity, i must retract my offer of producing 'live gifts' as i feel it
may jeopordize my friendships and integrity here. besides, i'm pregnant
and i really just can't deal with the stress of this.

once again, sorry.

Thanks, guys.

Maybe you're down on the idea because you already have soundboard
quality live recordings, and really begrudge the rest of us experiencing

Perhaps with Leesa being so close to the Twins, she know first-hand that
they wouldn't mind so much....

I've been on this list for about a week now -
My CT collection is quite small, about 9 CDs that I've been paying around
$25 each "import prices"- 'cause noone carries the CDs, and noone listens
to them and noone's even heard about them here..
anyways, i get on this list and all these doors open up for me.. i realize
how HUGE a spectrum of music the CT's have produced, made etc.. and it
just blows me away. This offer was like a dream come true. I'll NEVER get
to hear some of the music you guys take for granted.. the stuff you've got
kicken' around I'd build a shrine to. I can NEVER hope to see them live
and it's one of my dreams.. All you ppl out there with the technology to
even copy CDs, wow.. anyways. I don't know what more to say. If i could
go out and buy the box set i would. If the Ct's decided to put out
anything I'd buy it (if i could get ahold of it).
I wish Leesa would reconsider also. "Gifts" couldn't possibly say it
enough for me.

I want to second that. I don't think the response has been overwhelmingly
negative -- just the opposite, the overwhelming majority of us appreciate
your generosity. The only negative remarks have been made by Jack & Doug, &,
while I respect their desire to protect the Twins, I feel that their
analysis is simply wrong. I doubt there's a single person who'd buy a copy
of this recording who would not also run out & buy any official live
release. Certainly, *I've* never known anyone who cared enough about a band
to buy/trade bootlegs & not to buy their official concert releases (perhaps
Doug does? He has some weird friends.).

I'm sure members of this list have collectively spent tens of thousands of
dollars on Twins recordings & concerts over the years, as well as giving
them our support & devotion. I hope & believe they wouldn't begrudge us
trading (or selling at cost) concert recordings, videos, &c. that aren't be
otherwise available. I wouldn't have gotten involved with Stratton's video
compilation otherwise.

I think you're sharing, not exploiting, your relationship with the Twins, &
I'm grateful that you've considered doing so.

I'm sorry that it turned out like this... I hope it didn't upset you too
much. I think it was pretty rude to be treated like that by some people
you considered friends, and I'm saddened by that myself although I
really don't know you. I think they owe you a heartfelt apology... you

Hello

I only found out about the CT discussion list a couple of days ago and this is
my first contribution.

I think what leesa did by offering "Live Gifts" was truly wonderful and I am
sorry that negative responses caused her stress. As a father myself I can only
hope that others respect her decision. The true gift is that there are people
like her willing to give up their time and energy in order to share something
beautiful with others.

Though I've been a CT fan since HOH I've never been able to see them live
because I'm disabled - this also limits me obtaining much in the way of
rarities ... If anyone can give me info on how to get videos, live recordings,
etc. I'd be more than grateful.

I may be 34 (like Liz) but I'm new to computers, the internet, etc. so if
someone can tell me what "flaming" is I'll make sure not to do it.

I'm also curious about literary influences of the CTs - I would guess Rilke
after "Rilkean Heart" but does anyone know more?

I must say that so far most CT fans seem like especially fine people...

Not much. "Four Calendar Cafe" is a phrase from the book "Blue Highways" by
William Least Heat Moon. I haven't read it, but apparently he rates cafes
according to how many calendars they have on the walls. Four is pretty good,
though not the best.

A couple of years ago, Liz specifically denied having read Joyce.

If I thought about it too long, I could really get pissed off about some of the
responses I've seen on this listserv. While yes, predictably, those who have the tape
(for the most part) have been somewhat hesitant to have copies made, those who don't
have it have been even more predictable because they couldn't give a shit about the
repercussions - they just want the fuckin' tape. Let me tell you what I care about:

I care about Jack, being the initial source, taking responsibility for a gift that is
now in going to be in wide distribution;

I care about mmmender beyond her ability to provide you all with a unique listening
experience. It's a nice thought, but if her relationship with the band deteriorates
over this it isn't worth it. I asked her if she received a go ahead...and got no
response. I can read between the lines, can you?

And finally, I care about the Cocteau Twins. Believe it or not their appeal isn't
restricted to the people on the listserv. They are not wealthy by rock star
standards, and this recording has market value for them. If it gets out, it will be
bootlegged. Regardless of how many copies are made now, and regardless of how well
you protect your copy, someone will fuck up.

Bottomline: If Jack got the original copy, and he doesn't want you to do
this......DON'T DO IT. If you don't have the express or even the implied permission
of the Twins.....DON'T DO IT. Do I need to point out that the comp video has nothing
on it that wasn't released commercially or broadcasted?

If any one wants to take exception with my point of view....e-mail me personally. And
don't waste my time with "it's only a few copies for fans who would buy everything
anyway."

Hi all,
I'm a recent joiner, so don't feel like I have much voice in this
group, but...

First, many thanks to Stratton (and "Paul the dubber") for the
just-received video compilation. Several clips blew me away...

And after the recent flurry about mender's proposed (withdrawn?)
CD, I find myself feeling guilty for having bought the video. My thoughts
are that both sides have good points. The issue of releasing a bootleg is
not so much who mender sells it to; the problem is if one of those then
does an unscrupulous mass production for profit. And thats a problem
mender can't control, except by not doing it to begin with. A sorry
situation indeed.

Only resolution I can see is an "unofficial" comment from the band,
thumbs up/down, to remove the onus from mender. Is that a possibility?

And if thumbs up, please sign me up, mender!

ok, ok I get your point and I do understand where you're coming from...
but you don't have to get all high and mighty about it. If you were not
'blessed' with the good fortune of obtaining a copy, you would more than
likely be one of those who "just want the fuckin' tape". I think your
attitude towards those of us 'have-nots' shows a lack of respect and
courtesy.
The disc won't be made and that's that... all I can say is I still think
you owe Leesa an apology, she didn't mean any harm and no harm was done.
Get over it.

damn cats stepping on the keyboard and sending before i am ready....

anyways, i agreee with this....yes, i want a copy, as i am sure everyone else
does too....i DO seem to remember reading somewhere that the twins had no
problem with bootlegs. i don't think mender would do anything that would go
against the twins' wishes. the bottom line is this....if it is OK with the
twins, then why do you all care so much about what could "possibly" happen if
this CD is made? the cocteau's are disbanding, unfortunately, so i doubt
this limited bootleg will harm their future releases.

an apology, I said nothing that requires one. I only wanted her to be SURE of what

One final thought......Leesa asked me if I wanted a copy of the CD in question. I
said YES. I still do, but not under these circumstances.

Why don't we add a little $$$ to the price of each CD, send it to mender

Well Leesa, why not e-mail Simon and Robin about this. I think you can
have CDs printed in batches as small as 300. You could propose only
printing a small number, distributing them only to people through this
list and the web site, limit distribution to ONE per fan, and add $5. to
the cost of each CD which in turn would be sent to the band. That sure
as shit wouldn't be bootlegging in any form, and I think Simon and Robin
are cool enough to go along with something like this. Especially since
it would be their loyal following producing and buying the CDs.

The Breeders did something similar, as do many other bands. There are
official fan-club type releases. Breeders have released a "Live In Stockholm"

okay, next...not to belabor this thread, but I have mixed feelings about
CT's last-album idea. When something's sooo good, you want it to last
forever, yet there's a point where creative minds want to be set free.
Or at least given a few years' sabbatical :-)

as for the big send-off, how about a live online thingie?? Like most of
you, I'm cash-strapped. Gotta pay back those pesky student loans...

Although we're beating what amounts to a dead horse...

Circumstances Defined: Someone gets permission (express or implied) from one of the
principals (a Cocteau Twin) to reproduce their recording. And when questioned, the
person who received the permission would feel confident enough to respond to any
inquiries in an affirmative manner. (So, uh, just between you and me.....what
mmmender said to me about it being "between Simon and I" or that it's "none of your

would I care about what anybody says?)

Hey everyone,

the topic du jour focuses on bootlegs. Now, I'm pretty sure at least
99.9% of the video-watching public in America have taped a rented movie.
And many listies here, including myself, have traded for boots, video
comps, etc.

While bootlegging and video-dubbing eventually harm the business
producing and selling videos, cds, and other intellectual property, there
are acceptable practices.

For example, by a legal rule called License, we (the public) are allowed
to make copies for *personal* enjoyment, which is what most of us do when
we compile songs from cd to tape (or cd to cdrom, whatever). The limits
are: no public distribution and no money profit from the copying. What
does this have to do with leesa's offer (or stratton's)? Provided
neither turn a profit on distributing the videos or boots, neither
crosses the threshold of licensing limits. It would be as if two people
traded for goods of equal value. The drawback? If the person offering
the stuff got it illegally, then it's a no-no.

I'm not giving legal advice here...I haven't passed the Bar yet. But
what I'm suggesting is that the mutual sharing and trading of property,
without profit, could be okay. Just be careful if you decide to mass
produce (which is what jack alludes to).

eileen
p.s. I could get raked over with the legal stuff too. No worry, I plan
to take Copyrights next fall. Oh, and another note...my email program,
Juno, allows me (by license) to copy their program and send it to anyone
I want, provided I don't get money for it.

There once was a fan club and a single fan club release...

Lincoln Fong, their sound man of many years. He has almost
hundred live quality recordings, the later ones are DATs.
They are dead set against releasing live CDs.

And so i will again say: the Bluebeard-CD from the CTs is still available here
in Germany.
If anyone is interested, email my privatly:

eichfeld@t-online.de

The price is for the CD and stamps and package all together 11 US$. The price is
only so high, because the stamps are nearly for the same price like the CD.
German SnailMail is expensive...
The CD is from the year 1994 and with these tracks:

1. Bluebeard 3.54
2. Three Swept 3.36
3. Ice-pulse 3.45
4. Bluebeard (Acoustic Version) 2.53

Well now Xanthra, I'm not professing to be Doug's friend as a means of
disguising my intent, now am I? Perhaps my whole message eluded you.

Enough of this Leesa. One day you may actually feel thankful for the points I made in
discussion. I'm sorry you chose to view it the way that you did.

For your further edification, I didn't purchase the video comp. Check your facts.

Perhaps your whole message is without merit. You've learned the words (e.g.,
passive-aggressive) -- intuitively, the next step is to learn what they mean.

Okay friends...

I think enough has been said on the subject of the 'live gifts' bootleg and
the controversy surrounding it. It was an exciting prospect but it's not
going to happen. Valid points were made in the debate but now its lost its
meaning for the list. Remember, there are nearly 300 people who get an
email everytime you send it to the list. I would bet that 90% of them
don't care to read about this anymore. We're here to discuss the band, the
music and *hopefully* to make some new friends. Let's keep that in mind.
If we don't then we're going to have people sign off because they're tired
of what they consider junk mail. The idea is for the list to grow...not
shrink...especially in a time that's plagued by rumors of a breakup of the
band.

Let's move on...

i must disagree with you Dax! i grow tired of this....(ha, i have disagreed
with you ! touche, let us fight to the death with electronic word barrages!!!
:) )

anyway, i want everyone out there to read the following, and then DO IT!

step 1. find your copy of _Victorialand_.
step 2. play it loud enough to drown out the outside noise.
step 3. sit in a comfortable position and breath deeply, feel your breaths,
listen to the waves of saxaphone from "Lazy Calm" wash over you. as you
breath in, breathe in the beauty and majesty that is _Victorialand_, as you
breath out, relax your body and let all of these issues just leave your
consciousness....keep breathing and listening until you feel calm and not
upset anymore...

now that you are calm, i want to say one little thing -- i think that what
happened here the past few days has been a communication problem. i have read
much from all of the parties involved, and i think that everyone was just
trying to be nice and helpful --mmmmedner to the fans, doug to the Twins.

BOTH WERE RIGHT in their own particular context....

we have had a slight communication difficulty, but no one really needs to sit
and throw names at each other. just listen to _Victorialand_...

that is all....

Pandora's Box is the forum at the CocteauTwins website where can exchange
pleasantries, daily rants, etc., with like-minded Twinheads. A fine little place.

The Digital Parking Lot is another section of the site where visitors can order
Cocteau-related merchandise and music online - direct from the Twins' own stock.

Both can be found at "www.cocteautwins.com"

I just wanted to express my incomprehension at the reaction of certain
contributors to the list over the weekend in their reaction to the mmmmender
CD thing!

Where the hell do people get off getting as outright aggressive at that with
someone (especially someone who is a long established 'friend' and
contributor to this circle/list).

As someone quite accurately identified, what happened to any similar
reaction to the CT video compilation organised by Stratton?? none! what
happens when people post items for sale on this list (some of which can
certainly be found in record stores if you look hard and long enough?? nothing!!

surely by trading such items on this list we are preventing our friendly
record store owners from making a small profit to put bread on the table for
their families???? (don't bother blasting me for that comment, Its called
sarcasm!!)

I don't know mmmmender personally but feel I can appreciate her position
over this and her motives for offering the CD were certainly NOT (in my
humble opinion) driven by a matter of profit, so BACK OFF!

Pity people didn't bear the points Stratton has just made, in mind at the
beginning of the discussion!

By the I received the video compilation, and i think it's great! I'm just
amazed at some of Liz's hair-do's over the years. In 1982, she was all
punkish, but in 83 or 84, she looked like any "normal" person on the
street. Just one question... What in the world is with Liz's hair in the
"Bluebeard" video? She looks like Elaine from Sinefeld with a really bad
haircut. Anyway, my favorite video was probably Evangeline. The band
looks great, and the video is just absoultely beautiful, just like the
song.

Those were figurative balls, of course. But now that you've displayed them, I can see
that they're big, hairy, and they drag on the floor. Haunting Ghost indeed.

Thanks for your input nonetheless Christine.

ok, listen, i know a lot of people on the list are kind of upset right
now. i'm not going to take sides, but there is something i want to get
off my chest. i personally don't like getting e-mail after e-mail of
bickering between listies. first off, i think that any conflict should
be handled off-list. secondly, what is this list about? a "discussion"
list about the twins, right??!? not about fighting. i just hope
everyone can take a step back and think about why we all subscribe to
this list. i don't think anyone (and i mean "ANYONE") had any bad
intentions on anything they were offering. i know words have been said,
but at least on the list please drop it. for all of us that don't want
to hear it. this list should be bringing us all closer together. i
know from my experience, i have met some terrific individuals off of
this list. let's not give it a bad name. i don't want to have to
unsubscribe. i enjoy reading this list (when it's civil) because i can
converse and discuss my favorite band with others like me all around the
world. i'm going to shutup now.... thanks for your time...

Thank you Doug, I think. At least that sounded complimentary, in a
masculine sort of way. Now that we have vented our frustrations with
one another, it would be quite nice if we could continue on from here
on a completely different footing. Umm...I believe we even displayed
an example of how not to act.

Mark, what I did was just to mail a money order for the amount stated
(for where you happen to be) to the Dewdrops address, along with a
letter stating which item I was ordering. The address is somewhere on
the site. If you have any trouble finding it e-mail me. It really is
an outstanding compilation, one which I'm sure any Twins fan would love.

I noticed at the last show I was at, in NY for Milk and Kisses, that
Robin had a pair of Rivera amps, each miked with an EV RE1000. But I'm
not absolutely sure.

In his effects rack was at least an Eventide DSP4000, but I don't remember
the other gear real well. I wrote a weensy bit of the DSP4000 code
and of course was excited that he had some of my code on stage, but I
can guarantee you that he wasn't actually using the part I wrote. :)
The woman who wrote the user interface for the 4000 is also a Twins fan
(I gave her a tape of Treasure when I worked with her!) so forgive me
for going on about it but it's nice for us to see that sort of stuff...

I'm pretty sure they have the older Eventide H3000 or relatives in
the studio. You can do nice subtle pitch change choruses with it, and
both boxes have great reverb. They also own a lot of OLD effects.

I don't know enough about guitars to know what Robin was actually playing,
but the Rivera/EV combination has a very characteristic sound. Simon (or
Mitsuo Tate?) was playing a 5 string bass...what was and IS Mitsuo's
role in this? He's great. I think he and Simon worked well together on
stage, I think with Mitsuo playing guitar a lot when Simon played bass.

I'm still having fun trying to identify the tape deck in many of the videos
on the compilation tape :) You can see different tape speeds they
used as time goes on...I figure that someone clued them in to the fact that
higher tape speeds sound a LOT better and the later videos have the reels
moving faster, fwiw.

Uh, OK, disclaimer time:

If you've read this far, you're thinking "does he ever LISTEN to the
music?" and I am being defensive in advance about it. Not because any of
you have flamed me (spirits forbid!) but because I feel like being real
analytical about their music isn't what's going on for me.

Professionally, my job is to pay attention to the most meticulous detail.
As a listener of music, I try to achieve some balance between being aware
of technical issues, and grinning (that's why I like my job!). Buuuuut,
Cocteau Twins are just plain unlike any other experience, and I melt, and
I am not an engineer, I am a blob which has to be peeled off the ceiling
of that show in NY and every other show I've seen. They put me in such
shock and trance I feel with no other band, so, I just don't think of
them in conventional terms.

Except for a few moments where I notice mikes and amps and all that, because
I like to :) :) :)

The web site has some info about September Sound which will explain a lot too.

mark, i have the official "september sound press kit" and it has tons of
technical information in it regarding each sound room, but he's a brief
outline of some of the equipment available there:

equalizers/amps
-amek medici 2 channel equalizer
-amek 9098 rupert neve mic amp
-aphex type C aural exciter
-exr exciter
-aural exciter
-spanner autopanner
-yamaha DEQ7 2 channel digital eq
-yamaha Q2031 2 channel graphic eq

microphones
-AKG C3000
-AKG C1005
-AKG D112
-AKG C451E
-calrad DH 58-HL
-earthworks TC30K
-neumann U87 (this is the famous liz fraser microphone)
-neumann KM 84i
-sennheiser MD21

as you can see the list is quite extensive, i have more details regarding
the consoles, multitrack, monitors, pianos, live rooms, dynamics, delays,
drum machines, sequencers but it's much too much to send to the mailing
list. perhaps what i'll do is scan the entire sept. sound press kit and
post a message to the list when it's up online.

OK, a little research on this one and i figured out i asked the wrong
question. I guess I was thinking about this (i grabbed this off some
homepage about Martyn Bates, can't remember the address):
" 'Death of Polly' from Murder Ballads (Drift) was selected for a
double-CD compilation _Crooning on Venus_ -out now. The project was led by
David Troop, who told Martyn [Bates] that Murder Ballads were the
instigator of this project. It is a rather "wild" project considering the
artists that have tracks on this compilation: Tom Waits, David Bowie,
Bjork, Cocteau Twins, Japan, Sun Ra, Captain Beefheart, The Beach Boys,
Ryuichi Sakamoto, Burundi Singing, Portishead, Van Dyke Parks, Nico,
Julie Cruise, Tenko, etc., etc."

So maybe i should have said-
Does anyone know about this compilation? What CT track is on it?

No, I enjoyed the post! I've always disagreed with Walt Whitman's poem about
the "learn'd astronomer" -- I've found that knowledge usually enhances
appreciation (hey, they're not just lights in the sky, they're *suns*!). As

Hi y'all,

I've been off this list for some time now, and judging from the
last couple of days output I'm beginning to wonder if I shall stay
around again.

However, if anyone's interested an record store here in the North
of England has just mailed me their latest sale list, which
includes the 7 inchers of Evangeline and Iceblink Luck. Oddly
there are two prices quoted for both - 75 pence and 50 pence, so
I'm wondering if they mean the CD single and the 7 inch, or even
the cassette single? I'm not up on the detailed CT discography
from this period - but I guess most of these would be hard to find
items?

Their website is at www.action-records.co.uk/ or I can send anyone
the TXT file of the sale list I was sent if they want it. They
have a minimum order of 3 pounds, but I'm sure you could find
something else in their stock to bump up the price.

mmm, yes, exactly. Quite a paradox sometimes. I think it's related to how
some of use REELY want to know what Liz sings, and others REELY don't
want to know because the magical stuff begs no concrete understanding.

The tishbite video has completely changed my listening of the song.
Kinda neat to know, but I never knew I didn't know, or something.

suspend the list mail. This doesn't unsubscribe you from the list, it only
turns off your mail delivery until you reset it. If you don't take this

On Lorelei, Robin and Simon appeared to have swapped instruments. What's
all that about then? Which track made the biggest impression on you? For
me, it was the live rendition of 'Song To The Siren'. And finally, how
is it possible to have so many different hair styles?

I have the green Violaine single, with Alice and Circling Girl on it. I
will sell it for $10 (which is what I paid, & it's in fine condition)
plus shipping & handling. $15 all told will be plenty. If you haven't
already found a copy.

I've always LOVED the beginning guitar line of From the Flagstones. It
sounds so aquatic, and majestic. I picture water lapping or swaying up
against some concrete balustrades or pillars, and someone silhouetted
against moonlight. It's like a love song in the most non-cliched phrases
imaginable. Such a brilliant way of saying "i love you." Just a way of
capturing images that hold emotion. Also one of the very few (only?)
early CT songs with (mostly) discernible lyrics - like a particularly
lucid dream. Whereas most of the others are hazier dreams, that leave you
with only a feeling, FromtheFlagstones leaves you with actual phrases and
symbols. Brilliant & moving.

also, the live clip of orange appled got me a little misty, as it reminded
me of something that happened at the HOLV show in PA:

all the songs at this show were almost totally letter-perfect (sounding
just like the records, plus fifty-fold better). anyway, there was one bad
note that liz hit during "orange appled". she sings the "yippie-i-yay",
bit, then, during the guitar solo, robin (in his distant sort of way)
wanders far off to stage right (where the dat machine, and a HUGE stack of
amps rests). as he finishes, and liz begins the "quddle-quaw..." she hits a
particulary screeching note just as robin gets right in front of the amp!
what's funny about this? the surprised, yet casual way robin stops
walking, turns on one foot (the other leg is still in the air in mid-step),
and proceeds to extract himself from his vantage point and disappear behind
the stage! as if he was frightened!
it's on of those things where, you had to be there, and i wish i had a
video of it!

I'm in need of some help on how to remove myself from this darn mailing
list. I really don't like turning on my computer in the morning, just to
find I have sixty new messages, most of which came from the Cocteau list.
 I didn't save the subscription request I originally sent to get started;
then I sent a request send only "Digest" form - this worked a few weeks,
then reverted back this unruly creature, called the CocteauTwins List.
Please send me the correct command or point me to somebody who knows how
to remove oneself from this list altogether.

Actually, this is all hearsay, but I first heard about Liz's recording on
'The Winter Guest' soundtrack in August...and according to my source(who
works in the recording industry in the NYC area) it was being talked about
as award-potential material as soon as it was finished. Now, that's all
speculation, but it does make you wonder. I think Liz may be moving on
up...

I just listened to the Winter Guest today.
It mostly consists of soft piano pieces, typical of movie scores with the
exception that these pieces (by Michael Kamen) are actually more melodic than
most. Along with the piano are the standard strings. It's lovely.

But I don't understand why the cocteau page lists all these things that robin
and simon are doing, like production etc..., but I've not read anything about
Liz's outside ventures (ie, no mention of The Winter Guest, her working with
Massive Attack, etc..)
I don't think they like her anymore :-(

Yes, hail to Stratton & all the "dubbers" out there for this fantastic video
compilation! I was glued to my TV the first night I received my copy. As a
CT fan from way back in '84, it was an incredible experience to see both live
recordings as well as promo videos. I loved all versions of Bluebeard (Liz
had some unusual hair in the promo video!) The Rilkean Heart/Half-Gifts promo
was beautifully done - not sure I'm too crazy about the lyrics sliding all
over the screen though. I question for anyone who's friends with the Twins -
does Robin still have a beard & wear plaid shirts? I thought he looked more
like a lumberjack than the incredible musician that he is. (Not that there's
anything wrong with looking like a lumberjack!)

Peace -

Both Compact Disc Connection CDs are the same, just thru different
distributors. You'll see the number-part of the catalog number is the
same. It's not that common for domestic releases, but quite a lot of their
imports are like that. They had Simon's album listed at three different
prices because of that! Just order the cheapest one.

Speaking from CD Connection experience,

Ken

Okay, I remember hearing that Prince wished to work with the Twins, and
they declined. But, is anyone familiar with a song called "Love... Thy

collaborated on this song, and it sounds like a definite homage to the
Cocteau Twins. Am I hearing things, or just plain crazy?

Dear listies,

Thought you might be interested to hear that I am doing an independent
contract at Evergreen this quarter based on the music of the Cocteau
Twins. The indepent contract means that I am basically designing my own
program for myself to study what I want and produce the art that I want
and get credit for it under the guidance of a faculty member! It's the
great thing about going to Evergreen.
So my agenda is this: I'm going to paint five Cocteau Twins
songs. That is, paint interpretations of five CT songs, in oil on
canvas. I have chosen five songs which I think represent five different
emotional textures, as a sort of spectrum of the scope and range of their
music. I'm very excited about this project & wanted to share it with
those here who may share my enthusiasm.
Below are the five songs I have chosen, with the notes & ideas
I've been brainstorming for them:

1) LORELEI
        emotion: Love
        colors: purple & gold
images: girl dancing, figures kissing with colors enveloping them
and birds flying out of their mouths, rainbow, bells; merry-go-round
        working title: Purple Gone Gold

2) THROUGHOUT THE DARK MONTHS OF APRIL AND MAY
        emotion: Loneliness
        colors: blue & gray
images: rain and a cliff; figure kneeling, praying; withered
tree; snowflakes falling, melting; ocean in motion; boat lost at sea;
window with raindrops sliding down, with view of foggy outside; hand
pulling back curtain
        working title: Raindrop Dream

3) THE SPANGLE MAKER
        emotion: Fury (slowly building)
        colors: black & red
        images: eye of fire; spirit of rage rising out of a feeble body;
lightning striking, stormy skies; wolf with gleaming fangs; black water
pounding on a fiery shore; droplets of blood; a broken window
        working title: Bloodspangle

4) PANDORA
        emotion: Peace, Calm
        colors: yellow, pink, soft blue
        images: sleeping figure; feathers; clocks with no hands; pillows;
bubbles; clouds; candles; streams of intangible words; tranquil pond with
lilypads; waterfall with a woman behind it singing
        working title: Feather Candle Clock

5) FROU-FROU FOXES IN MIDSUMMER FIRES
        emotion: Resolution, Release
colors: all colors rising out of blackness
        images: foxes being burned; cathedral; smoke rising; phoenix;
explosion and fallout; flying away; dragon; catharsis
        working title: Milk and Fire

So those are the 5 I'm gonna work with. Believe me, it was hard to
narrow it to just 5 out of the dozens I would've liked to paint, but I
didn't want to overextend myself. A quarter's only ten weeks long after all.
I'm also recording some music of my own, using a 4-track &
guitars & bass & piano & trumpet & voilin & amps & effects pedals
(reverb, digital delay, tremolo/vibrato, chorus, flanger [yes!], phase
shifters, & the wammy bar on my guitar). Plus I'm writing a short essay
to accompany the five paintings. I've written the first paragraph
already, so I'll type it here for all to see:

In my experience there is nothing else like the music of the
Cocteau Twins. No other music that so consistently, for so many
years now, has conjured such colors and shades of emotion, evoked
so much thought, uplifted me more, or even as much, as the enchant-
ments created by this Scottish trio. Their music is an entire world
unto itself, a magic carpet ride into something beautiful and beyond.
Rather than crafting songs in the traditional way, the Cocteau Twins
shape sounds, sculpt atmospheres, and cast spells. There are no rough
edges to this music - everything is smoothed over, integrated, connec-
ted, blurred, glossed, dipped in sunshine and rolled in snow-
flakes. Even their cacophonies are euphonies. Everything flows,
glows, vibrates, and ultimately transcends. Just as Elizabeth Fraser
is unable to express her feelings in ordinary words and verses,
so it is difficult to describe the effect this music creates in
the mind of the receptive and perceptive listener. But this is
my belief: that the Cocteau Twins more than any band of recent times
are truly artists. They paint with music.

So there you have it, fellow Twinfolk. Sorry to be so longwinded, but I
hope it was worth the effort of reading. Looking forward to receiving
feedback from the group!

You are not crazy, great song. Prince has done a number of little known
ethereal pieces which may be inspired by our favorite band.

By Massive Attack, do you mean the Craig Armstrong LP on their label
Melankolik? I've been trying to get this since Xmas here in Liverpool
without luck. It got fairly mixed reviews in the dance music magazines
that I usually read, but includes at least 2 lush orchestral versions
of MA songs PLUS one Liz collaboration, so it's an absolute must.
Anyone got a copy?

Ed (who's just been reminded he has tickets for Massive Attack in
Manchester in March - woah)

maybe the problem is that the people who want to unsubscribe due to the

...or maybe at the end of *every* message should be the above note on how

used to be, though the problem with that became that people sent replies to

unlike some, i don't get pissed off with the number of messages i get from

Joseph,

Thanks for that - I always to love to hear what images
CT songs bring into other peoples heads. I've got to say you're
Pandora ideas are pretty close to mine -

for me Treasure (the whole of it) has to be lying in a
meadow in the south of France with a bottle of red wine
and no need to move for hours if not days.

A friend of mine told me that he always thinks of Treasure as the
perfect soundtrack to a winters day
when everything is frosted white - pretty much opposite
to me.

But that's the genius of having unintelligible lyrics
isn't it! Your head is free to go wherever it wants to.

By the way - any chance of the finished paintings being
put on the web in some form? I'd love to see them.

Stuart

I read that the Craig Armstrong LP wasn't supposed to be released until
February 24. According to the Virgin UK site it's going to be out in early
February but you know how things get pushed back. Anyone have more
concrete information?

As far as Liz working with Massive Attack: Liz is supposed to also appear
on the new Massive Attack album proper along with Tracey Thorn of EBTG. I
don't know any details...I recall reading something back in August about Jo
Wiley on Radio One wanting to get Liz in along with the band for a live
session...and then also reading something regarding Tracey Thorn making an
appearance on the album as well. The only concrete information according
to the Virgin UK site is that Massive Attack's new album will be out this
year. According to the November '97 issue of Alternative Press, Liz was
working with them in Bristol...but that's all it said. Anyone have
insider/more information?

Very fascinating. I am a musician and have been thinking of ways that I can
appreciate art more; maybe even paint or draw in the future. I'm new to this,
but what if you came up with the images first and then chose your colors last;
that would give you more color ideas, based on your images. Am a breaking
some sort of art rule of thumb that I don't know about? Again, great work.
It would be great to have some of us share their images so we can compare!!!

The first time i heard this song was, coincidently, part of a university
project done by a fellow classmate in my Costume Design/Construction
course. It was in 1994 and the assignment was to
design the costumes for and create a story (that we later acted on stage)
for some greek/roman mythological charachters. I can't remember the name
of the girl who chose this to do for her assignment- but her characters
were Lachesis, Clothos, and i also can't remember the third goddess. These
three godesses spun a person's life out on a thread, measured the thread
and then cut the thread (marking birth, the lifespan and then death).
The three goddesses danced in a circle to the song "Pandora" while
performing their actions.
So it's kind of interesting how both of you gathered the impression of
time out of Pandora.

In reference to Liz Fraser's work outside of CT ... It's not listed with the
collaborations on the homepage and I've yet to see it mentioned here ... I'm
speaking of FSOL's 39 min. "Lifeforms" e.p.. All tracks have Liz Fraser vocals,
the writing is credited to Future Sound of London & Elizabeth Fraser, and it
was recorde at two studios one being September Sound. This may be old news
considering it's a '94 release but I was curious as to it's genesis and the
lack of mention it receives.

Also I'm missing 3 (make that 4) CT singles : Tishbite (1 & 2); Bluebeard; and
Violaine (disc 2). I've been told these have all been deleted ... any
information on how I might obtain them would be most appreciated ( sometimes I
wish I was still living in London ... )

Bye for now

Excerpt from interview with FSOL in Mondo 2000 #13:

        MONDO 2000
Why did you choose to work with Liz Fraser on the LIFEFORMS
        single?

        GARY COBAIN
She's one of the few vocalists that we find really evocative. Most

        wanted to play across it.

The whole analogy with us to a band would be: if you've got a
stage
and you try to present it as a band you'd have like 2,000 musicians
each of whom came on, stood around for 99% of the gig and then
just raised, say, their flute and went "whoot!" Musicians would
just
feel too uncomfortable doing that. It might be brilliant in terms
of the
listening thing, it might really benefit from that flute only
coming in
once, but the flautist would feel so uncomfortable; they'd want to
perform. That's the musician's natural instinct, to have the flute
playing all the way through it. The guitarist wouldn't be able to
stop --
he'd be all over the track! He'd maybe pause for one bar. The drum
would go all the way through it. That whole method of
self-indulgent
musicianship is over for us. And Liz Fraser has that non-linear
look --
I thought so anyway, but she's really more scatty than that; it's
bizarre.

There was a really heavy editing process. Then we had all the
overlays, because what she does is she has a little cassette
recorder, she listens to it a couple of times giving prompt points.
Then she completely wings it -- ad libs it -- and she gets this
kind of
mess and starts overlaying it to get structure, to try and
accentuate
certain bits. So, it's really quite complicated. That day in itself
and
from there onwards was quite a mess, to actually get that track
into
        fruition.

I also remember reading something Liz said about this project after the
fact. She wasn't too pleased with the final outcome...I think she recorded
quite a bit more than actually made the CD and was disappointed by this. I
think her contribution was pretty brilliant...although I too wish there had
been more of her.

I was surfing around and came across the Massive Attack site on The Raft in
the UK. Not only do they have information on Massive Attack, but they also
have information about Craig Armstrong's solo album 'The Space Between Us'
which features Liz on 'This Love'. On top of that, they have the song
available for download via Realaudio. So if you've got realaudio then go
to the URL below and hear the next Liz side project now. Sounds like a
winner to me!

robin seems to have phased out his lumberjack look and seems to have taken
a liking to the velour look! he does indeed still have a beard and his
tongue is still pierced! perhaps the scariest part of robin is his
obsession with 'fat elvis'! (go figure)

There was (for about 10 minutes) a band by the name of The Blue Up? who
released an album a couple years ago (produced at Paisley Park, another
Prince connection). This album SpoolForkaDish had tribute-type songs on
it, most obviously "Blasting XTC" for XTC. I also thought that the tune
"Capture This" was all about Liz, and that the title and chorus quite
possibly could have originally been "Cocteau Twins"! Band member Rachel
thanks, among many others, the CT for their existence on the liner notes.

So, now who's making crazy correlations?

You're not breaking any rule - there are few rules in art, that I follow
anyway, other than basic matters of technique (dilute oils with linseed,
rinse brushes with salad oil instead of turpentine, etc.) - it's just
that CT songs often create images in my mind which are more colors and
shapes than actual objects or representational subject matter. So I was
choosing a different color scheme to go with each picture, since each
picture is going to represent a different emotion. I often connect
emotions with colors.
However, the colors I listed were just a sort of first draft
idea, not chiseled in concrete. Today I finally put the brush to the
canvas and actually started the first painting, the one based on the song
Lorelei. I've changed the title and the color scheme. Instead of purple
and gold I've made the angels sort of yellow-gold with frosted blue wings
and hair, and the title is going to be "Love of Angels." The image
matter has also changed. The painting has two angels (of indeterminate
sex) kissing, butterflies flying out of their locked lips in a spiral
pattern, while colorful stylised snowflakes fall all around. Somehow
Lorelei seems like a cool or cold wintery type song, and makes me think
of snowflakes and ice skating, but it also makes me think of birds or
angels flying gracefully through the air, and of love and kissing,
especially the middle "bridge" section of the song ("da dow da dow da dow
oo WHOA-oh!" - I absolutely swoon to this part of this song, the voice
completely sweeps me off my feet.) On Friday I hope to have this first
painting finished and "exhibit" to the others in my group. I'll keep
updating for those who are interested as my ideas evolve towards their
final forms. And I would love to be able to post the finished paintings
somehow to the group or on one of the web-sites, but I'm ignorant of how
to go about such things . . . maybe later. More to come.

Hi all,

Just received mine and I must say I couldn't be happier. What's really
amazing is watching the evolution of the band from stiff statues on stage
early on to much more comfortable (in fact, possibly even having fun!) later.
Truly amazing is Robins transformation from introspective and flat to emotive
and, dare I say, rocking. Especially since he seemed to LOSE weight as the
years passed. Also cool is watching the Liz who started off banging the floor
for lack of anything better to do to dancing around and smiling.....awesome.
Nothing will approach bizarre as much as watching CT on Jay Leno, something
about that piece just seems so surreal.

Simon Raymonde of the Cocteau Twins just posted this on their web sight:

At this moment it would be foolish to deny that there is some uncertainty as
to the future of this group. The record we were making has been abandoned,
so there are no immediate plans for any releases. While it is unlikely that
these difficulties will be resolved, there is some hope that this record, a
record, from this period will surface at some point. The label 'bella union'
is flourishing, and there is no end to the differing projects that the three
of us will be involved in, resulting in hopefully many more records than
before. Perhaps there is a feeling that this is a rather premature end to
the group, but i would rather leave it to others to commentate, commiserate,
analyse, and dissect the whys and wherefores. I have no intention of going
into the personal nature of these conflicts, but would like to say that all
three of us would be nowhere without the dedication and commitment that you
all show. Of course many of you will feel unsatisfied by much of what i have
said, but this is not rocket science. this group is a very emotive force,
and you must take into consideration how strongly we all feel about this.
there will be more cocteau twins records etc to come out over the next few
years.4AD are planning a compilation;Mercury probably aren't, but well you
never know! Robin and I both have some very exciting things on the go; we
are also talking about doing a record together very soon; but for the moment
i shall finish by saying that perhaps one day things will settle down,
enabling us to move forward, but at this precise moment, you should
understand that I am not in a position to give any more information. thanks

To "prepare yourself" for what to expect with Liz and Massive Attack, I
suggest you pick up their last album, PROTECTION.

Yes, it is techno/electronica/trip-hop, but several of the songs have lush
strings added, and laid-back jazz-influenced vocals, which makes it *much*
more approachable, at least for me. Tracy Thorn (of Everything But The
Girl) is on PROTECTION, as well as the upcoming album. The strings and
sung vocals give it the emotional element I needed.

If you decide you like the style, check into Delerium's KARMA (it has
Sarah McLachlin on one track!) or the Morcheeba album. I think this is
likely the direction Liz is heading, since the jazz-influenced type vocals
seem to be her interest.

What Jonathan Gray means to say is
BLUE SUNSHINE by The Glove

Robert Smith, Steven Severin did a cool pop ungoth album in the 80's.
They used some female singer whose name I don't remember.

We are sharing lyrics and the delight that someone else enjoys this
semi-obscure little pop treasure

Sorry to start such a way-off-topic thread when more CT related news is afoot.

Just on a side note, I'd like to clarify that Massive Attack
are not techno...for those unfamiliar with their
music, such an association would surely link them with a "Rave" image or
possibly get them dismissed as techno babble a la Prodigy. They are
definitely soulful and would be better compared to acid
jazzy/hip-hop/electronica...or I guess even labeling them as Trip Hop
would be more appropriate. Well, I suppose labels are unimportant but I
just cared that their music be more accurately described because I think
they're pretty wonderful...

Their first album, "Blue Lines" is a very soulful, sensual album, while
their second album "Protection" is a smoother, jazzier one.

Both are excellent and receive high recommendations from me...

Also, this band spawned the artist TRICKY who left after their first
record.

Oh come on - there is NO WAY you can call Massive Attack "Techno".
To Europeans "Techno" is not an alternative way of saying (ugh)
"electronica" - it is a definite sub-set of house music
characterised by "metallic" beats, no vocals and repetitive
rythms. Just about the one thing MA are not is Techno - their
music certainly has elements of soul, jazz (gasp!), trip-hop,
reggae etc. etc. but not bloody Techno!

Wrong, wrong and wrong again.

The real MA question we need answered was posed last night on Vh-1
by Sir. Thomas Vance - in the video for "Be Thankful", is (s)he or
isn't (s)he? Any ideas?

one would like to think that every station that receives a copy would play
it, at least once, but you never know. it certainly is hard enough getting
cocteau twins videos on air so i would imagine that simon raymonde videos
would get the same royal treatment from the mainstream media! nonetheless,
MTV etc. will receive copies, whether or not they play them is another story!

Hello Gentle List-Members (at least of very late..),

I was rummaging around some cookbooks the other day and found something
very interesting. I found a recipe for "Atholl-Brose," which evidently
is a sort of scotch beverage. And yes, "Atholl" is spelled with two 'l's
in the recipe.

To make Atholl-Brose, you need the following:

3T rolled oats
2T heather honey
1 qt scotch

Place the oatmeal in a mixing bowl and add just enough cold water to
make a thin paste. Allow the mixture to stand for 1 hour, then strain
through a fine sieve with the back of a spoon to release the liquid.
Discard the oatmeal.

Mix the oatmeal liquid with the honey, and then the scotch. Re-bottle
the liquid and shake well before serving. Serve either straight up or
with a mixer.

Evidently this concoction was made by the Earl of Atoll in 1475. He
somehow captured a castle by getting his opponent's men drunk on this
stuff. Now, it is traditionally served in Scotland on New Year's Eve to
the first guests crossing the threshold of the host's home, hence its
other name, 'first-footing.'

Has anyone else ever heard of this?

All I know of him is through his work with David Sylvian (Who is my other
musical obsession along with The Cocteau Twins). He designs Sylvian's
covers and he and David did some art exhibits together and a book and
CD called "Ember Glance" which is hard to come by. I purchased
Mills' "Undark" CD cause David Sylvian and Robin Gutherie appear on it,
but I must say, it isn't very good. Very ambient and not much
melody.. but the Sylvian track is worth it to me.

Hmm, aren't the Cocteau Twins still together? I thought there was a new
album due soon. I'm confused. I don't follow them too closely but I love
their music which is why I joined this list. Don't you just love the
internet?

No, I don't- and I do not have any friends who collect or listen to
Cocteau Twins CDs. This is why it is such a mystery to me.... Could
you please say more about the Volume 17 compilation(?).

Thank you,
Cortney

Thanks for the info on Massive Attack (JohninGB, Acid303, and kenclinger,
especially) I shall check them out.

Oh, and gj, that's a good point you made about distinctions between
techno et. al. I guess out of all the nonCT stuff I listen to nowadays,
most of it is drum&bass, trip-hop, and trance.

Yep, you have heard it before if you have been to/bootlegged/traded for a
M&K tour!

Great song, isn't it? There was a tidbit on Liz's favorite singer, Nina
Simone, on the webpage that I think about whenever I hear the song.
Also, Faye Wong covered it...though I can't recall the album and song
title.

Hey guys-- I didn't get a digest last night-- has everybody run out of
things to say already?

Just thought I'd mention-- last semester I used CT for two of my class
design projects (I'm getting a master's in publications design from the
U. of Baltimore) I did my own version of a 12.5" LP cover for
4-calendar cafe. I came up with a nifty abstract graphic that seemed to
fit, and since part of the project requirements were to use some sort of
text or song lyrics, I used the lyric "interpretations" of a few of the
songs that I thought were accurate. (I know that would never happen in
real life, I'm just taking advantage of my artistic license ;-) As it
turns out, my instructor was a longtime CT fan! She had a great
appreciation of the v24 designs and understood the music as well, which
was really nice, so is it any wonder I ended up with an A? :-)

The other project was in a typography class, in which we had to do a
typographic interpretation (on a 10.5" square panel) of a song of our
choice. I dipped once again into the 4CC era and used "evangeline",
since it's one of my favorites and has some of the clearest lyrics. My
instructor for this class wasn't nearly as cocteau-friendly, but I
managed a B+, anyway. I'm going to put jpgs of the projects on my
website eventually. Anybody else ever done anything similar in graphic
design class?
